Ashoka (अशोक) is a place name mentioned by Panini under Sakhyadi (सख्यादि) (4.2.80.9) group. [1] and also mentioned in Mahabharata as a Tirtha.

Ashoka tirtha (अशॊक तीर्थ) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.86.10).

Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 86 mentions the sacred tirthas of the south. Ashoka Tirtha is mentioned in verse (III.86.10)....."And, O son of Kunti (Kaunteya), in that spot is the tirtha called Asoka (अशॊक तीर्थ) abounding in woody retreats of ascetics. And, O Yudhishthira, in the country of the Pandyas are the tirthas named Agastya and Varuna.[2]
