Mandeep Punia is a freelance journalist from Jhajjar, Haryana. He was arrested on Sunday 31 January 2021 from the Singhu border point between the city and Haryana where a huge number of farmers have been protesting for months.

A Delhi court on 2.2.2021 granted bail to freelance journalist Mandeep Punia who was arrested on Sunday from the Singhu border point between the city and Haryana where a huge number of farmers have been protesting for months.Mr Punia was granted bail by the Rohini court on a guarantee of ₹ 25,000.
The bail order said, "It is a well settled legal principle of law that 'bail is a rule and jail is an exception'."
The journalist was arrested by the Delhi police under various sections under the Indian Penal Code for "obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions", "assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty", and "voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty".
"...the alleged scuffle incident of present case is of around 6.30 PM. However, the present FIR was registered at around 1.21 AM on the next day. Moreover, the complainant, victims, and witnesses are police personnel only. Hence, there is no possibility that accused/ applicant can able to influence any of the police officials," the bail order said.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Satvir Singh Lamba had yesterday reserved the order for today after hearing the arguments of the accused as well the public prosecutor. Advocate Akram Khan, appearing for Mr Punia, told the court that the accused was merely carrying out his journalistic duties.
Mr Khan said that another journalist was detained along with Mr Punia but was released around midnight. The reason the police gave different treatment to the accused was because he was not carrying a press card, the counsel said.
"Accused is a freelance journalist and not carrying a press card can be no grounds for a case or arrest. The accused is a well-respected member of the society being a journalist, including being a frequent contributor to the Caravan magazine," he said.
The Delhi police sought the dismissal of bail application, saying he may again indulge in instigating the protesters and create nuisance at the protest site. The agency said the accused tried to break the barricades and scuffled with police personnel deputed on highly sensitive law and order arrangement.

कौन है मनदीप पूनिया?
मनदीप पूनिया एक फ्रीलांस पत्रकार है, उसने साल 2017-18 में IIMC (Indian Institute of mass communication) से पढ़ाई की. साल 2018 में मनदीप IIMC प्रशासन के खिलाफ 'हॉस्टल' की मांग को लेकर भूख हड़ताल पर बैठे थे. तीन दिन तक चली उस भूख हड़ताल के बाद प्रशासन को पीछे हटना पड़ा और आने वाले बैच के लिए होस्टल देना पड़ा. आज उस हॉस्टल में 42 बच्चों को रहने के लिए जगह मिलती है.
उसे पैसों का मोह नहीं है, IIMC से पढ़ने के बाद मनदीप ने बहुत जगह जॉब नहीं देखीं, उसने मीडिया में चुनिंदा जगहों को ही अपने काम के लायक समझा. वह मीडिया से निराश था ही कि इसी बीच उसके पिता दुनिया छोड़कर चले गए, मीडिया की हालत देखकर मनदीप अपने गांव लौट गया और वहां जाकर खेती करने लगा. लेकिन खेती सिर्फ इसलिए की ताकि पेट भरता रहे और और जहां-तहां आंदोलनों की रिपोर्ट करने के लिए आने-जाने का किराया आ जाया करे.
मनदीप ने खेती की लेकिन मीडिया नहीं छोड़ी, उसने उन ऑनलाइन पोर्टलों के लिए कम पैसों में लिखा जो जन पत्रकारिता कर रहे हैं. जो हर अत्याचार के खिलाफ मुखर होकर बोलते हैं. मनदीप ने अंग्रेजी की प्रतिष्टित मैगज़ीन 'CARAVAN' के लिए भी एक से एक संवेदनशील रिपोर्ट लिखी, जिसमें छपना न जाने कितनों का सपना होता है. लेकिन बीते दो महीनों से वो केवल और केवल किसानों के मुद्दों पर लिख रहा है. वह आमतौर पर किसान आंदोलनों के टैंटों में ही सोता, वहीं खाता. और वहीं से किसानों पर हो रहे सरकारी अत्याचार के बारे में पल-पल की अपडेट देता रहा.
भाजपा के गुंडे 'स्थानीय लोगों' के भेष में किसानों पर पत्थर बरसाने पहुंचे. मनदीप उस वक्त मंच के पास ही मौजूद था. चूंकि वह वहीं हरियाणा का ही रहने वाला है इसलिए आसपास के नेताओं, विधायकों, उनके चमचों और गुंडों को पहचानता है. उसने भाजपा के गुंडों को पहचान लिया. सुबह उसने फेसबुक पर लाइव करके उन सबके नाम ले लेकर उन्हें एक्सपोज किया और ये भी बताया कि वे भाजपा में किस पद पर हैं. स्वभाविक है जिन-जिन भाजपा नेताओं और गुंडों के नाम लिए गए मनदीप उनके निशाने पर आ गया. मनदीप ने ये भी खुलासा किया कि उसने अपनी आँखों से देखा कि किस तरह पुलिस खड़े होकर भाजपा के गुंडों से निहत्थे किसानों पर पत्थर बरसा रही है. मनदीप ने ये सब बाकायदा सबूतों, फोटो और विडियो के आधार पर एक्सपोज किया. स्वभाविक है मनदीप पुलिस के भी टारगेट पर आ गया था. सुबह मनदीप ने विडियो बनाई और शाम को पुलिस ने सिंघु बॉर्डर से मनदीप को अरेस्ट कर लिया.
मनदीप जब तक सड़क पर था वह आप लोगों के लिए रिपोर्ट करता रहा. बिना कभी पैसों का लोभ लालच किए, पत्रकार से ज्यादा वो आप सब को अपना भाई और अपना परिवार मानता था, इसलिए खाली पेट पत्रकारिता की, तंगहाली के दिनों में भी मनदीप ने कितनी अच्छी खबरें की हैं. और वो कैसे कैसे अपनी रात दोस्तों के यहां बिताया करता था, कैसे आर्थिक स्थिति से लड़ता था. उसने जमीन पर अनाज बोया और उसी के पैसों से जमीन की पत्रकारिता की. मनदीप जब तक सड़क पर था तब तक उसने आपसे कुछ नहीं माँगा.
