Penganga River (पेनगंगा नदी) is the chief river of the Buldhana, Hingoli, Nanded, Yavatmalt, Chandrapur and Washim districts in the Maharashtra state in India. It is also divided Marathwada and Vidarbha near Umarkhed.

River Course

The Painganga River originates in the Ajanta ranges in Aurangabad district in Maharashtra. It then flows through Buldhana district and Washim district. It flows through Risod Tehsil of Washim where it gets Kas river as the tributary near Shelgaon Rajgure village and then flows through the border of Washim and Hingoli district. Then it acts as a boundary between Yavatmal district, Chandrapur district and Nanded district of Maharashtra. It then flows along the state border between Maharashtra and Telangana. It confluences with "Pur River" near Mahur in Nanded. The small Vidarbha river merged with Painganga river at village Deurwada near Wani city of Yavatamal district and Kodsi village in Korpana taluka of Chandrapur district. There is an old Lord Shiva temple at Jugad near Wani city of Yavatmal the river confluences as an island.

Every year at Guru Purnima in the November month devotees from other places comes for worship. Penganga converges into Wardha River near a small village called Wadha in Chandrapur taluka of Chandrapur district.

Wardha River flows into Pranhita River which in turn flows in to Godavari river, which finally ends into the Bay of Bengal just east of Rajahmundry in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The total length of the river is 495 km .[1]

Tributaries: The Painganga River's tributaries include the Adan, Kas, Arunavati, Kayadhu, and Pus Rivers. [2]

History

पेन गंगा नदी

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[3] ने लेख किया है .....पेन गंगा नदी (AS, p.577) दक्षिण भारत में बहने वाली एक प्रमुख नदी है। इस नदी को प्राचीन साहित्य की वेणा या प्रवेणी नदी भी माना जाता है।


यह नदी महाराष्ट्र में अजन्ता की पहाड़ियों से निकलती है। पेन गंगा नदी गोदावरी नदी की सहायक नदी है। आन्ध्र प्रदेश के आदिलाबाद ज़िले से बहती हुई यह नदी अपना जल चिम्मूर नगर के पास गोदावरी नदी में गिरती है। इसकी प्रमुख सहायक नदियाँ पूस, अरना तथा अरान नदियाँ हैं। ये नदियाँ उत्तर से आकर पेन गंगा में मिलने से पहले आपस में मिल जाती हैं। विदर्भ इसी नदी के किनारे पर बसा हुआ है, जो पुराने समय में बहुत प्रसिद्ध था।
