Gangabal Lake (गंगाबल झील), also called Haramukh Ganga, is a lake situated at the foot of Mount Haramukh[1] in Bandipora district, north of Srinagar, in Jammu and Kashmir, India. The lake has a maximum length of two and a half kilometers and maximum width of one kilometre. It is fed by precipitation, glaciers and springs. The lake water outflows to a nearby Nundkol Lake[2] and then via Wangath Nallah[3] to Sind River.[4]

Location
The Gangbal lake is approached from Srinagar 45 kilometers by road via Ganderbal up to Naranag and then a trek of 15 kilometers upslope leads to the lake, which can be covered by a horse ride or by foot. The gujjar shepherds can be seen during the trek with their flocks of sheep and goats. Another trek (25 kilometers long) leads to the lake site from Sonamarg via the Vishansar Lake crossing three mountain passes Nichnai pass, Gadsar pass and Zajibal pass of an average elevation of 4100 meters.[5] It can also be accessed through a trek from Bandipore via Arin.[6] The trek to the lake Gangabal takes place in an alpine environment, (cut crossing) with meadows, (cut from) and huts of Gujjars with their herds crossing through two passes over 4,000 m to get to the lake Gangabal.
History
Gangabal has been mentioned in Hindu texts like Nilamata Purana as well as Rajatarangini. Authors like Walter Roper Lawrence and Francis Younghusband also mentioned Gangabal lake and it's association with Hindu rites.
Religious significance
It is an alpine high altitude oligotrophic lake,[7] home to many species of fish, including the brown trout. This lake is considered sacred in Hinduism, and as one of the home of Lord Shiva. Kashmiri Hindus perform annual pilgrimage called Harmukh-Gangabal Yatra.
Gangabal Lake is sacred for Hindus. Each year Kashmiri Hindus take pilgrimage to the lake on the Ganga Ashtami. In the past Kashmiri Hindus used to immense the ashes of their dead ones in this lake.
गंगाबल झील
गंगाबल झील (Gangabal Lake) या गंगबल झील (ﮔﻨﮕﺒﻞ ﺟﮭﻴﻞ) भारत के जम्मू व कश्मीर राज्य के गान्दरबल ज़िले में हरमुख पर्वत के चरणों में स्थित एक स्वच्छ पर्वतीय झील है। भौगोलिक दृष्टि से यह एक टार्न झील या गिरिताल की श्रेणी में आती है। ढाई कि॰मी॰ लम्बी और एक कि॰मी॰ चौड़ी इस झील में पानी पास की पिघलती हिमानियों के झरनों से आता है। झील से बाहर पानी एक धारा में पास की छोटी-सी नन्दकोल झील में जाता है और वहाँ से वंगथ नामक झरने में निकलता है जो आगे जाकर सिन्द नदी (सिन्धु नदी से अलग) में विलय हो जाता है। गंगाबल झील में ट्राउट समेत कई मछलियों की प्रजातियाँ मिलती हैं।
हिन्दू मान्यता: हिन्दू मान्यता में यह हरिद्वार जितनी पवित्र है और लोग यहाँ धार्मिक पूजा करने व अपने मृत परिजनों की अस्थियाँ विसर्जित करने आते हैं। हर वर्ष यहाँ पारम्परिक तीन-दिवसीय धर्मयात्रा चलती है। विवरण
पहुँचने के मार्ग: यहाँ पहुँचने के लिये श्रीनगर से 45 कि॰मी॰ गान्दरबल से आगे नारानाग बस्ती तक का सड़क का सफ़र और फिर 15 कि॰मी॰ की पैदल चढ़ाई है जो घोड़े पर भी तय की जा सकती है। यहाँ आसपास के मर्ग (घास के मैदान) में चरवाहे अक्सर अपनी भेड़-बकरियाँ लेकर आते हैं। यहाँ पहुँचने का दूसरा रास्ता सोनमर्ग से विशनसर झील से होते हुए 4,100 मीटर ऊँचे निचनई दर्रे को पार करके आता है। बांडीपूर की आरीन बस्ती से भी यहाँ पैदल-मार्ग आता है।
