'''Pawan Kumar [[Khatkad]]''' (Captain) (15.01.1993 - 21.02.2016) was from [[Badhana]], [[Jind]] district in [[Haryana]],  died fighting terrorists on Sunday 21.2.2016 in [[Pampore]] in [[Pulwama]] district of [[Jammu and Kashmir]]. == Early life ==
Capt. Kumar was born on January 15, 1993, observed as the Army Day in the family of Rajbir Singh. Pawan's father Rajbir Singh is a school headmaster based in [[Jind]], [[Haryana]]. He was a degree holder from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi.
== Career in army ==
He graduated from the 123 course of the National Defence Academy and was commissioned into the Army on December 14, 2013. He was with the 10 Para Special Forces and in service for less than three years. Commissioned into the Dogra Regiment in December 2013, he had enthusiastically volunteered to join the elite, much-decorated 10 Para-Special Forces in June 2015.

== Pampore operation ==
He was one of the five security personnel killed in the operations at [[Pampore]] where terrorists are holed up in the government run Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI). The Army also lost Capt Tushar Mahajan from Udhampur and Lance Naik Om Prakash, 32, both from 9 Para who succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Two personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Head Constable Driver RK Rana and Head Constable Bhola Singh were also killed.

On Capt Kumar one officer said, “He was killed as he was leading his men. The operation was tricky as possibility of some civilians being trapped in was not ruled out.”

According to Army officials, he had taken part in two successful operations earlier in which three terrorists were killed — including the operation on February 15 in Pulwama in which one terrorist and two civilians were killed.

“Pawan Kumar was a young and a dynamic officer, He was a true commander”, Lt. Gen. S.K. Dua, General Officer Commanding of Udhampur based 15 Corps said after paying respects to his mortal remains.

The mortal remains of Capt Kumar were transported to [[Jind]] by air on Monday for last rites. The Army had appealed to people of Haryana for their full support “in giving a befitting farewell to the brave son of their soil.”

The encounter in Pampore began on Saturday after terrorists entered the seven storey building of the Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) where 2-3 terrorists are still believed to be held up.

On hearing about his son’s death, Capt Kumar’s father Rajbir Singh's first reaction was, “I had one child, I gave him to the Army, to the nation. No father can be prouder.”

Capt. Kumar’s death and his father’s comments could not be any starker to the developments in his home state [[Haryana]], which is burning due to agitation by the [[Jat community]] demanding reservation and as JNU in Delhi boils with debates of anti-nationalism.

“He was destined to be in the Army as he was born on Army Day,” he added.

Haryana government on Friday 17.3.2016 said it will set up an educational institute in the name of martyr Capt Pawan Kumar who died while fighting militants in [[Jammu and Kashmir]]'s [[Pulwama]] district last month. Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma made the announcement while replying to a question by MLA Prem Lata during the Question Hour in the budget session of the Haryana Assembly. कैप्टन पवन कुमार का जन्म 15 जनवरी, 1993 को हरियाणा के जींद नगर में श्री राजकुमार खटकड़ के परिवार में हुआ था। बाल्यकाल से ही वे सशस्त्र बलों के प्रति आकर्षित थे। 14 दिसंबर 2013 को उन्हें भारतीय सेना की डोगरा रेजिमेंट की 7 बटालियन में लेफ्टिनेंट के रूप में कमीशन प्राप्त हुआ था।

पवन कुमार एक कठिन परिश्रमी और साहसी सैनिक थे। अतः उन्होंने विशेष बलों में सम्मिलित होने का निर्णय लिया और पैरा कमांडो का प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त किया। जून 2015 में वह 10 पैराशूट बटालियन में सम्मिलित हो गए, इस यूनिट के अधिकारियों और सैनिकों को "DESERT SCORPIONS" के नाम से भी कहा जाता है, जो विशेष रूप से रेगिस्तान में युद्ध के लिए प्रशिक्षित किए जाते हैं।

वर्ष 2016 में कैप्टन पवन कुमार अपनी बटालियन के साथ जम्मू-कश्मीर में तैनात थे। 15 अक्टूबर 2015 से 16 फरवरी 2016 तक चार सफल ऑपरेशन चला कर कैप्टन पवन कुमार ने छः आतंकवादियों को मार दिया था। एक कार्रवाई में उपद्रवियों द्वारा की गई पत्थरबाजी में उनका जबड़ा टूट गया था, तो भी चिकित्सकीय सलाह के विपरीत 16 फरवरी 2016 को उन्होंने आतंकवादी विरोधी अभियान में निरंतर अपनी टुकड़ी का नेतृत्व किया।

20 फरवरी 2016 को लश्कर-ए-तैयबा के चार आतंकवादियों ने AK-47 राइफलों, हथगोलों और विस्फोटकों से श्रीनगर को जम्मू से जोड़ने वाले मुख्य मार्ग पर सीआरपीएफ की CONVOY पर घात लगाया। इस घात में 11 CRPF कर्मी घायल हो गए। इसके पश्चात आतंकवादी भागकर पंपोर में सरकार के “उद्यमिता विकास संस्थान” (EDI) के बहुआयामी भवन में घुस गए।

सेना और केंद्रीय रिजर्व पुलिस बल के साथ सुरक्षा बल वहां पहुंचे और भवन से नागरिकों को सुरक्षित निकालने के लिए संयुक्त ऑपरेशन में भवन की घेराबंदी कर दी। क्षेत्र की घेराबंदी से पूर्व सुरक्षा बलों ने 100 से अधिक नागरिकों को उस भवन से सुरक्षित निकाल लिया। इसके पश्चात, आतंकवादियों को निष्क्रिय करने के लिए सुरक्षा बलों द्वारा भवन पर धावा बोलने का निर्णय लिया गया।

20/21 फरवरी 2016 की रात्रि को, कैप्टन पवन कुमार ने लक्ष्य की निकट से टोह ली और संपार्श्विक क्षति को अल्प करने के लिए भवन में INTERVENTION ऑपरेशन चलाने का निर्णय किया। आगे से नेतृत्व करते हुए, वह ऊपरी तल पर पहुँचे और उस कक्ष में गोलीवर्षा की जिसमें आतंकवादी छिपे हुए थे।

जैसे ही उन्होंने कक्ष के भीतर हथगोला फेंकने के लिए उसके द्वार पर पांव से प्रहार किया, भीतर छिपे हुए आतंकवादी ने उनपर निकट से गोलियां चलाई, घायल होते हुए भी उन्होंने प्रत्युत्तर में फायर कर उस आतंकवादी को मार दिया और भवन को मुक्त करा दिया, किंतु आगे चलकर घातक घावों से वह वीरगति को प्राप्त हो गए।

उनकी वीरतापूर्ण कार्यवाही ने सुरक्षा बलों के ऑपरेशन को सुगम कर दिया था। 48 घंटे तक प्रवृत रही इस मुठभेड़ में कैप्टन तुषार महाजन, कैप्टन पवन कुमार, लांस नायक ओम प्रकाश, सीआरपीएफ की 79 बटालियन के हेड कांस्टेबल आर. के. राणा और 114 बटालियन के हेड कांस्टेबल भोला सिंह ने सर्वोच्च बलिदान दिया। 

कैप्टन पवन कुमार को उनकी प्रतिबद्धता, असाधारण साहस, युद्ध की भावना एवं सर्वोच्च बलिदान के लिए 15 अगस्त 2016 को मरणोपरांत "शौर्य चक्र" सम्मान दिया गया।

'''आर्मी में कैसे गए''':JNU में एडमिशन भी ले लिया था घर बिना बताए NDA का फार्म भर दिया और जब वो पेपर पास कर गए तो तब बताया घरवालों ने कुछ नहीं कहा क्योंकि इकलौते बेटे का सपना था. पेपर क्लियर करके लेफ्टिनेंट भर्ती हुए. 9 डोगरा में फिर कैप्टन बनकर आये लेकिन सपना था 10 पैरा में जाने का. अफसर ने मना किया कि घरवालों से साइन करवाओ फिर घरवालों के साइन करवाये. फिर भी मना कर दिया और शर्त रखी जो गेम होने हैं इनमें फर्स्ट आओ तो कर देंगे 10 पैरा में. वही किया पहले नम्बर पर आये और फिर 10 पैरा में 3 सफल ऑपरेशन किये.

'''सबसे अहम क्या''':  जब ये तीसरा ऑपरेशन करके आ रहे थे तो इनपर पथराव कर दिया. जबड़े के दांत टूट गए और छुटी मिली 22 जनवरी तक की. ये घर भी आ सकते थे लेकिन सोचा कहीं घरवाले परेशान न हो वहीं अपना इलाज करवाया. 21 जनवरी को आंतकवादियो ने एक बिल्डिंग पर कब्जा कर लिया. पंपोर में ये छुटी पर थे और दूसरे कैप्टन भी किसी वजह से ये ऑपरेशन नहीं ले पाए तो इन्होंने खुद अपना जज्बा दिखाते हुए छुटी छोड़कर ये ऑपरेशन हाथ में लिया व कैप्टन का फर्ज निभाते हुए आतंकवादी को ढेर किया. जब आखिर में पूरा ही होने को था ऑपरेशन तो इनको छाती में गोलियां लगी. 

'''अंतिम संस्कार की खास बात''': जाट आरक्षण चल रहा था जींद से नगूरां तक 15 Km पेड़ काटकर सड़क पर डाल रखे थे. जब पता चला कि बधाना का पवन शहीद हो गया व गाँव मे जाएगा पार्थिव शरीर तो पता भी नहीं चला वो सब पेड़ कहाँ गए. जाट आरक्षण आंदोलनकारियोों ने ही सड़क साफ बना दी. नगूरां से बधाना तक रोड भर गया था. सभी लोग 3 km खेतों के रास्ते से बधाना श्मशान में आये.  एक खास बात है जो पवन की माँ को आज तक नहीं बताई गई. उस शेरनी ने शेर को जन्म दे रख्या था और मेरे पापा बताते हैं जो दाह संस्कार के बाद वहीं रुके थे.  इतना बड़ा दिल था 4 आदमी उसको लगे थे.
