Aman Sehrawat
Aman Sehrawat (born 16 July 2003) is a freestyle wrestler who competes in the 57 kg weight category. He is the youngest Indian to win an individual Olympic medal, having secured a bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.[1] He also won a gold medal at the 2022 U23 World Championships and was the 2023 Asian champion.
He belongs to Birohar village in Jhajjar district of Haryana. On 9 August 2024 Aman Sehrawat won bronze medal in Wrestling at the Paris Olympics.
Early life
Aman was born in a Sehrawat Jat family in the village of Birohar, Haryana, where he initially took part in mud wrestling. Inspired by Sushil Kumar's silver medal win in the 2012 Summer Olympics, he enrolled at the Chhatrasal Stadium in North Delhi at the age of 10.[2][3] Both of his parents died due to different medical conditions when he was 11 years old.[4]
Career
Sehrawat won his first National Championship title in 2021. He used to train under coach Lalit Kumar.[5]
In 2022, following his gold medal at the Under-23 Asian Championships, Sehrawat became the first-ever Indian to win a gold medal at the Under-23 World Championships.[6]
In April 2023, he won the gold medal at the 2023 Asian Wrestling Championships in Astana.[7][8] He then won a bronze medal in the 57 kg category at the 2022 Asian Games.[9]
In January 2024, he won the gold medal in the men's 57kg event at the Zagreb Open wrestling tournament, defeating all his opponents by technical superiority.[10]
Sehrawat competed at the 2024 World Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament in Istanbul and earned India a quota place for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.[11] The WFI picked him over Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Ravi Kumar Dahiya for the 2024 Olympics.[12] He was the only Indian male wrestler to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics.[13]
In the men's 57 kg event at the 2024 Olympics, he defeated Vladimir Egorov and Zelimkhan Abakarov via technical superiority, before losing to the top-seed Rei Higuchi in the semifinal.[14] He won the bronze medal by defeating Darian Cruz 13–5, becoming the youngest Indian to win an individual Olympic medal at 21 years and 24 days.[15]
