Dara Shikoh (Urdu: دارا شِكوه Hindi: दारा शिकोह) (20 March 1615 – 30 August 1659) was the eldest son and the heir-apparent of the fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. His name in Persian means "as magnificent as Dara". He was favoured as a successor by his father and his sister Princess Jahanara Begum Sahib, but was defeated by his younger brother Prince Muhiuddin (Aurangzeb) in a bitter struggle for the imperial throne, and was killed in a battle with an army sent by his younger brother, Aurangzeb.
The great scholar
Dara Shikoh is described to be the great lover of Indian philosophy. He leant Sanskrit and had knowledge of Upanishads, was very lenient towards Hindus and people of other faiths.
