Previously known as Ranastambha or Ranastambhapura, the Ranthambore Fort was founded by the Nagil Jats who are descendants of Nagavanshi Mahapurusha Nagavaloka. Maharaja Sajraj Veer Singh Nagil who ruled from 880 to 935 AD, was the major contributor to the infrastructure of the Fort, who built it for the purpose of defense. Later on, this Fort fell into the hands of the Chauhan Dynasty, who used it as the center for resisting the expansion of the Delhi Sultanate. From the year 1226 to the 1300s, the Fort has been besieged by several Kings and Sultans.

The kingdom of Mewar captured the Fort and occupied it in the late 14th and early 15th century. It was later passed to Hada Rajputs of Bundi and captured by the Mughals in the mid-16th century. In the 17th century, the Fort came under the control of Kachwaha Maharajas of Jaipur and it remained a part of Jaipur until Indian independence after which the state became a part of the state of Rajasthan in 1950.
