Yozgat is a city and the capital district of Yozgat province in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. According to 2009 census, population of the district is 645,266 of which 75,853 live in the city of Yozgat.

Location

Yozgat Province (Turkish: Yozgat ili) is a province in central Turkey. Its adjacent provinces are Çorum to the northwest, Kırıkkale to the west, Kırşehir to the southwest, Nevşehir to the south, Kayseri to the southeast, Sivas to the east, Tokat to the northeast, and Amasya to the north. The provincial capital is Yozgat. Yozgat is located on the Plateau of Bozok in the Department of the Central Red River in the Central Anatolia Region. Samsun-Ankara-Sivas highway and Kayseri and Mersin highways pass through Yozgat.

Etymology

The city's original name was "Bozok" and later the name was changed to Yozgat province. Oguz, "Bozok" arm began to flock to this area with the Turkmen regime. "Bozok" was referred to by name towards the 1800s as well as the name "Yozgat" was pronounced.

The origin of the name "Yozgat" is disputed. Different rumors have been put forward. According to a rumor,Yozgat layers are rising from the bottom up Saray from town. This is because many times the height of the rise and altitude at first "hundred times" was called. time grumbling under the name "Yozgat" has become.

History

Yozgat, presumably has a history of 5000 years. Yozgat around the state established the first political union is the Hittites. Hittite era, today Yozgat is located within the boundaries established in the ancient city of Hattusa.

Excavations

Yozgat has been subjected to a number of surveys and excavations in the past and it has become quite clear that there is still a great deal of history located under the surface of Yozgat. Officials from the Yozgat Museum Directorate are expected to concentrate their efforts in uncovering an old world Roman bath that is said to be located in the Sarikaya neighborhood while other archaeologists are carrying out excavation work in Cadirhoyuk, home to the lost city of Pteria and one of the greatest ancient civilizations in world history. Cadirhoyuk is located close to the Peyniryemez village in the Sorgun district and excavation work is planned to continue till the month of August 2014.
