History

Kopili River

Kopili River (named after sage Kapila) is an interstate river in Northeast India that flows through the states of Meghalaya and Assam and is the largest south bank tributary of the Brahmaputra in Assam.[1] The Kopili originates in the Meghalaya plateau and flows through Central Assam and the hill districts of Assam before its confluence with the Brahmaputra. In Assam it drains the districts of Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Kamrup and Nagaon.[2] The river flows for a total length of 290 kilometres and has a catchment area of 16,420 square kilometres . It is noted for several spectacular waterfalls along its course which has several deep gorges and rapids in the 120 kilometres of its flow before debouching into the plains at Nagaon district.[3]
