Karnal, January 6 Mr Mohinder Singh Lather, a former MP and son-in-law of Mr Devi Lal, ex-Deputy Prime Minister, yesterday accused politicians of both Haryana and Punjab of dividing people of the two states on the SYL Canal issue.

Talking to this correspondent here, Mr Lather alleged that the powers that be in the two states were complicating the issue. Further, they were allowing the friction to grow.

Mr Lather who had taken up the issue while being a member of the Lok Sabha further alleged that the silence of the Vajpayee Government on this “was dangerous”.

He maintained that the Union Government was either unaware of or unable to fathom the far-reaching consequences of the friction among the people of the two states, if it was allowed to grow.

He squarely blamed the politicians in power for spoiling the show.

Mr Lather expressed the view that the statements of the politicians on the construction of the SYL Canal were creating a division among the farmers in the two states.

This was a dangerous trend which would adversely affect their interests in the two states and ultimately throughout the country.

The former MP said he was firmly against politicising the issue. Mr Lather stated that water was the “lifeline of farmers” and the river waters belonged to all.
