History

Mṛgadāva (मृगदाव) or “deer park” is the name of a place at Vārānasī where the vihāra named Ṛṣipatana was located, according to the 2nd century Mahāprajñāpāramitāśāstra chapter V. Note: Ṛṣipatana or Ṛṣivadana, on the outskirts of Benares where the Deer Park (Mṛgadāva or Mṛgadāya) is located. It is there that all the Buddhas must give their first sermon and the Buddha preached the Dharmacakrapravartanasūtra to the five monks; it is one of the four great pilgrimage places, determined by the Buddha.[1][2]
