Pushkaradvipa (पुष्करद्वीप) is the dvipa ("island" or "continent") of the terrestrial world is among seven dvipas as described by Bhagavata Puranas.[1]

History

More than 2000 years ago the writers of Puranas have adopted similar method and divided earth in to natural divisions based on the predominant flora or fauna of this region. According to Matsya, Bhagavata Purana, the world was divided into 7 dvipas. They are:

  1. Jambudvipa (land of Indian berries)
  2. Kushadvipa (land of Kusha grass)
  3. Plakshadvipa (land of fig trees)
  4. Pushkaradvipa (land of lakes)
  5. Salmalidvipa (land of silk cotton trees)
  6. Kraunchadvipa (land of kraunca birds)
  7. Shakadvipa (land of Shaka people).[2]

पुष्करद्वीप

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[3] ने लेख किया है .....पुष्करद्वीप (AS, p.571): पौराणिक भूगोल की कल्पना में यह पृथ्वी के सप्त महाद्वीपों में से एक है। विष्णु पुराण के अनुसार- 'जंबू प्लक्षाह्वयौ द्वीपौ शाल्मलश्चापरो द्विज, कुश: क्रौंचस्तथा शाक: पुष्करश्चैव सप्तम:।' विष्णु पुराण 2,2,5 इसके चतुर्दिक शुद्धोदक सागर की स्थिति बतायी गयी है।
