Udhampur (उधमपुर) is a city and district in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Location

The district of Udhampur is located in the Shivalik range of Himalayas and the terrain is mostly mountainous. The upper reaches of the district experience snowfall in the winter season.The city itself is in a relatively flatter part of the district at an elevation of 756 metres (2480 feet) and it rarely experiences any snowfall.

Administration

Udhampur district comprises eight tehsils (Chenani, Ramnagar Tehsil, basantgarh, latti,Majalta and seventeen blocks, namely, dudu Basantgarh, Gordi, Chenani, Bajalta, Panchari, Ramnagar and Udhampur.

History

Named after Raja Udham Singh, it serves as the district capital and the Northern Command headquarters of the Indian Army. A Forward Base Support Unit (FBSU) of the Indian Air Force is also stationed here. Udhampur is used by the Armed Forces as a transit point between Jammu and Srinagar when travelling by road on National Highway 1A, which has since then been renamed as National Highway 44.

उधमपुर

उधमपुर भारत के जम्मू और कश्मीर प्रदेश का एक नगर है। यह उधमपुर जिले का मुख्यालय भी है। यह राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग 1ए पर जम्मू और श्रीनगर के बीच स्थित है। हिन्दुओं का प्रसिद्ध धार्मिक स्थल वैष्णो देवी उधमपुर के निकट है। उधमपुर में भारत की सबसे लंबी सुरंग बनाई जा रही है। उधमपुर का नामकरण राजा ऊधम सिंह के नाम पर है। यह भारतीय सेना के उत्तरी कमांड का मुख्यालय है। भारतीय सेना द्वारा जम्मू और कश्मीर के बीच यात्रा के दौरान ट्रांजित पॉइंट के रूप में इस्तेमाल किया जाता है।
