Vedagiri (वेदगिरि) is a hill on which Vedagiriswarar temple dedicated to the god Shiva. It is located in Tirukalukundram, Tamil Nadu, India.

Location

Thirukazhukundram is located on State Highway 58, 70 km away from Chennai and 15 km away from the famous tourist town Mahabalipuram. It is also 15 km away from Chengalpattu.

History

Tirukalukundram is known for the Vedagiriswarar temple complex, popularly known as Kazhugu koil (Eagle temple). This temple consists of two structures, one at the foot-hill and the other at the top-hill. The main attraction, the large temple hill-top temple houses the deity of Shiva, known as Vedagiriswarar. The temple at the foot-hills is dedicated to his consort Parvati, known here as Thiripurasundari Amman. The temple at the foot-hills has four towers (gopurams) closely resembling the architecture of the Annamalaiyar Temple

वेदगिरि

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर ने लेख किया है .....वेदगिरि (AS, p.874): मद्रास (वर्तमान चेन्नई) से 4 मील की दूरी पर स्थित पक्षीतीर्थ की एक पहाड़ी का नाम है। पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार वेदों की स्थापना इस पहाड़ी पर कुछ समय तक भगवान शिव की [p.875]:आज्ञा से की गई थी। वेदगिरि पहाड़ी 500 फुट ऊंची है और इसका क्षेत्रफल प्रायः 265 एकड़ और घेरा दो मील के लगभग है। पहाड़ी के नीचे बने मंदिर की बहुत ख्याति है और कहा जाता है कि 'अप्पर', 'संबंदर', 'अरुणागिरी', 'शंकरर' तथा अन्य महात्माओं ने यहाँ आकर 'भक्तवत्सलेश्वर' तथा 'त्रिपुर सुन्दरी' के दर्शन किए थे। यहाँ गिरिशिखर पर बना हुआ मंदिर बहुत प्रसिद्ध है। शिखर के नीचे की ओर जाते हुए एक गुफ़ा मंदिर मिलता है, जो एक ही विशाल प्रस्तर खंड में से कटा हुआ है। इसी कारण इसे 'ओरुक्कल मंडप' कहते हैं। इसके दो बरामदे हैं, जिनमें से प्रत्येक चार भारी स्तम्भों पर आधृत है। मंडप के भीतर पल्लव कालीन (7वीं शती ई. की) अनेक कलापूर्ण मूर्तियाँ है। वेदगिरि को ब्रहागिरि भी कहते हैं।
