Son of Risaldar Maj. Mohinder Singh of village Bajhghera of Gurgaon district, vinod was a brilliant student and an outstanding sports man. He completed his schooling from Moti Lal Nehru sports school Rai and joined NDA. His out standing performance during NDA won hom the Gold Medal.

Major Vinod Kumar Rana won the Prestigious `Sword of Honour' at the Indian Military Academy.

He was posted at the Rashtriya Rifles where he was recognised by the Army for moulding his unit into a formidable counter-insurgency team. He led a number of operations from the front and died in a battle that led to the killing of three terrorists and recovery of a large cache of war-like stores.
