History

Sandhya Jain[1] mentions Kopana (कॊपन) as a fierce southern tribe in the list of Tribes With unclear Position in Kurukshetra War.

Koppal is surrounded on three sides by hills and was an important town in the history of Karnataka and also known as Kopana Nagara. It contains historical locations such as Koppal Fort, Gavimath (a religious shrine) and the Malle Mallappa Temple. Koppal is known as Jaina Kashi meaning the most sacred place for Jains, so named because there were more than 700 Basadis (also called Bastis)- Jain prarthana mandirs.
