History

Sandhya Jain[1] lists them in Tribes with unclear position in Mahabharata War. Adhiraja (अधिराज) - A branch of the Matsyas; mentioned in the course of Sahdeva's conquest of the southern regions (II.28.2-4). Probably a dominion or tributary neighbour of Matsya kingdom.

In Mahabharata

Adhiraja (अधिराज) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.28.3)

Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 28 mentions Sahadeva's march towards south: kings and tribes defeated. Adhiraja (अधिराज) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.28.3).[3]....And the hero (Sahadeva) then, defeating Dantavakra, the mighty king of the Adhirajas and making him pay tribute, re-established him on his throne. The prince then brought under his sway Sukumara and then king Sumitra, and he next vanquished the other Matsyas and then the Patacharas.
