Bhimtal (भीमताल) is a town and lake in Nainital district in the state of Uttarakhand, India.

Location
It is about 22 k, from Nainital. Bhimtal is situated at an altitude of 1370 meters above sea level. The major attraction in Bhimtal is the Bhimtal Lake, which has an island at its centre. Besides tourism, Bhimtal has also now become a mini district headquarters since most of the district administration offices have been shifted to the newly constructed Vikas Bhawan, the building complex for district administrative offices.
History
Bhimtal is an ancient place named after Bhima of Mahabharata. Bhimeshwara Mahadev Temple, an old Shiva temple in the bank of Bhimtal lake, is believed to have been built when Bhima visited the place during the banishment (vanvas) period of Pandavas. The present temple was built in the 17th century, by Baz Bahadur (1638–78 AD), a King of the Chand dynasty, and the Raja of Kumaon.
Bhimtal is older than nearby Nainital as the city of Nainital is just 150–160 years old but Bhimtal is older than Nainital and Haldwani and was a stoppage on route to old pedestrian road is still in use here and this road connects nearby Kathgodam to all Kumaon region and even to Nepal and Tibet. It might have been the part of the famous ancient Silk Route.
Near the Bhimeshwar temple is one of the source of river Gargi known as Gola Nadi in the region and originates from Garg Parvat or village Gagar in Nainital District.
About 2 km from Bhimtal is Nal Damyanti Tal, a small natural lake. It is believed that the palace of famous king Nala drowned into this lake. It is a very sacred place for the dwellers of the region. About 5 km from Bhimtal is the famous group of lakes known as Sattal, which is a place of attraction for nature lovers. Fresh water of lakes surrounded by thick forest and voice of birds is a wonderful experience. Hill near the lake known as Hidimba Parvata. It gets its name from demon Hidimba of Mahabharata. Vankhandi Maharaj, a monk and environmentalist lives on the hill now, and has created a sanctuary for the wild animals around the hill. The area is known as Vankhandi Ashram.
The hill of Karkotaka is supposed to be named after Karkotaka, a Naga king. The hill is famous for its Nag temple in the region and on every Rishi Panchami thousands of people visit the temple and worship the Nag Karkotaka Maharaj. This is one of the famous nag temples situated in Uttarakhand region.
भीमताल
भीमताल भारत के उत्तराखण्ड राज्य के नैनीताल ज़िले में स्थित एक नगर है। नगर का नाम भीमताल झील के ऊपर पड़ा है, जो नगर के मध्य में स्थित है। 'भीमाकार' होने के कारण शायद इस ताल को भीमताल कहते हैं। परन्तु कुछ विद्वान इस ताल का सम्बन्ध पाण्डु-पुत्र भीम से जोड़ते हैं। काठगोदाम से 10 किमी उत्तर और नैनीताल से 22 किमी पूर्व नैनीताल जिले में स्थित यह झील कुमाऊं क्षेत्र का सबसे बड़ा झील है। त्रिभुज के आकार का यह ताल तीन तरफ से पर्वतों से घिरा है। इसमें पर्यटकों हेतु नौकाविहर की सुविधा है। इसमें जल का रंग गहरा नीला है। यह कमल और कमल कड़ी के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। इस झील के बीच में टापू है, जिस पर रेस्टोरेंट है। इस झील से सिंचाई हेतु छोटी-छोटी नहरें निकाली गई है। भीमताल नैनीताल और हल्द्वानी से भी पुराना है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि यह स्थान प्राचीन सिल्क मार्ग पर पड़ता था जो नेपाल और तिब्बत को जोड़ता था।
कर्कोटक नाग के नाम से यहाँ एक पहाड़ी है जिस पर एक नाग मंदिर बना हुआ है। हजारों लोग ऋषि पंचमी के दिन यहाँ पूजा करने के लिए आते हैं। यह उत्तराखंड का प्रसिद्ध नाग मंदिर हैं।
भीमेश्वर महादेव मन्दिर: भीमेश्वर महादेव मंदिर नैनीताल से 22 किमी. की दूरी पर भीमताल झील के तट पर बसा हुआ एक प्राचीन मंदिर है| माना जाता है कि अज्ञातवास के समय पांडव इस क्षेत्र में आये थे, तथा भीमताल के किनारे भीम ने भगवान शिव की तपस्या की थी। तेरहवीं शताब्दी में यह क्षेत्र कुमाऊँ राज्य के अंतर्गत आया, और सत्रहवीं शताब्दी में यहां अल्मोड़ा के राजा बाज़ बहादुर चन्द ने भीमेश्वर महादेव मन्दिर की स्थापना की थी। चन्द काल में यह छखाता परगना का मुख्यालय हुआ करता था।
