Preface

The History of Bharatpur, which, from the brilliant deeds of its illustrious rulers, is very interesting, has been written many times successively. In 1878-79 it formed a part of the Urdu work Waquaya Rajputana in three volumes; again it was twice published in English in 1896 and 1898; it is almost the same in the History of Dig so far as that place is concerned; and it is partly contained in the History of Bayana compiled in obedience to the kind order of Mr. Holland tho Political Agent.

The Bharatpur History is quoted in the Settlement Report of the State, and in the "Two Sieges of Bharatpur," by the Honourable Mr. O'Dwyer and Major Stratton respectively, and references are made to it from time to time.

Recently it had to be written anew by order of the Honourable the Bharatpur State Council, once at the request of tho Vice-President of the Jodhpur Council for compiling a complete history of Marwar, and again for the 9th edition of the Handhook of India, Burma and Ceylon to be compiled by Mr. C. E. Buckland, I. C. S.

These recurring necessities and an earnest desire of its perusal by His Gracious Highness Sri Maharaja Sahib Bahadur, for whom it appears proper to know the past events of his State, have induced to bring out the present edition which, it is hoped, may meet the general approval and which may probably be the last work of the writer in course of nature.
