Jangha (जंघा) is a Jat Gotra.

Origin

Vishwamitra's sons became progenitors of many races and founders of many clans. Jangha is one of them.

Mention by Panini

Jangha (जंघा), legs, is mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi. [1]


Janghakara (जंघाकर), courier, is mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi. [2]

History

V. S. Agrawala [3] writes about Jaṅghākara as Administrative Officers in Panini which include included Duta – The Dūta or emissary was named after the country to which he was deputed. The term Pratishkasha also denoted a messenger. Couriers were called Jaṅghākara (III.2.21), corresponding to Jaṅghārika of Kautilya (Arth, II.1, p.46) .

In Mahabharata

List of Mahabharata people and places contains Jangha (जङ्घ) (XIII.4.51), (XIII.4).


Anusasana Parva/Book XIII Chapter 4 mentions ancestry of Viswamitra, a Kshatriya whose sons became progenitors of many races and founders of many clans. Jangha is mentioned in verse (XIII.4.51). ...."the illustrious Karna, Jangha and the great Rishi Galava, the celebrated Rishi Vajra, as also Shalankayana, ..."[4]


Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 46 mentions in shloka 21 about Lauha-Janghas:

The Nipas, the Chitrakas, the Kukkuras, the Karaskaras, and the Lauha-janghas are living in the palace of Yudhishthira like. bondsmen. [5]
