Khalilabad (Hindi: खलीलाबाद, Urdu: خلیل آباد‎) is a city in Sant Kabir Nagar district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is the district headquarters of Sant Kabir Nagar district.

Location

Khalilabad lies on the Faizabad-Gorakhpur road and is around 36 km west of Gorakhpur and 36 km east of Basti. Khalilabad lies in Lat. 26 47'N. and Long. 83 4' E. This is the center point of Gorakhpur and Basti.

History

The town is small but has a history which can be traced back to Mughal emperors. The place got its name from its founder, Qazi Khalil-ur-Rahman, who was appointed chakladar of Gorakhpur about 1860 AD.

At present this place is more famous for its handloom cloth market, popularly known as Bardahia Bazar. The tehsil building, situated to the south of the road to Gorakhpur, is an imposing structure created after the first freedom struggle in 1857 in which the place was sacked.

खलीलाबाद

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[1] ने लेख किया है ...खलीलाबाद (AS, p.254) संत कबीर नगर ज़िला, उत्तर प्रदेश में स्थित एक शहर है। यह शहर संत कबीर नगर ज़िले का मुख्यालय है, जो बस्ती मंडल का एक हिस्सा है। इस जगह की स्थापना क़ाज़ीखलील-उर-रहमान ने की थी। उन्हीं के नाम पर इस जगह का नाम 'खलीलाबाद' रखा गया था। खलीलाबाद स्टेशन से 6 मील की दूरी पर 'कुदवा' नाला बहता है, जिसे महात्मा गौतम बुद्ध के जीवन चरित से सम्बन्धित 'अनोमा नदी' कहा जाता है। इस स्थान से 8 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित तामा गाँव में महादेव मंदिर स्थित है। यह मंदिर भगवान 'तामेश्वरनाथ' को समर्पित है। यहाँ से तीन मील पर सम्भवत: मौर्य सम्राट अशोक के तीन स्तूपों के खंडहर स्थित हैं।
