Kunga (कुंग) was a region in south India north of Nilagiri which comprises of present Salem and Coimbatore districts of Tamilnadu, India.

Kunga (कूंगा) or (Koonga) is a gotra of Jats.

History

A Record of Buddhistic Kingdoms/Introduction: tells us that Chinese traveller Fahian's surname was Kung, and he was a native of Wu-yang in P’ing-Yang, which is still the name of a large department in Shan-hsi.

Note - There is a need to research if Kung is same as Kang Jat clan?

Jat History

Bhim Singh Dahiya :writes that we will try to show that the Kidarites and the so-called Haphthalite kings like Kunga, etc. took the names of their clans and it was by their clanish names that they were known in history. This does not mean that they were not Jats because all these clans are still found to be very much in existence among the Jats in India.

कोंगू - कुंग

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर ने लेख किया है ...Kongu (कोंगू) = Kunga (कुंग) (AS, p.228): इस देश का (वर्तमान मैसूर का इलाका) प्रथम शती ई. से आगे का इतिहास कोंगू-देश-राजाक्कल नामक तमिल ग्रंथ में है. इसका टेलर (Taylor) ने अनुवाद किया है.

कुंग

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर ने लेख किया है ...कुंग (AS, p.193) मद्रास राज्य में स्थित नीलगिरी के उत्तर का भाग जिसमें आजकल [p.194] सालेम और कोयंबटूर जिले शामिल हैं. इस राज्य को मध्य प्रदेश के कलचुरी वंश के राजा कर्णदेव (1041-1073 ई.) ने जीता था जैसाकि अल्हणदेवी के अभिलेख से सूचित होता है-- 'पांड्य: चंडिमतां मुमोच मुरलस्तत्याज गर्वग्रहं, कुंग: सद्गतिमाजगाम चकपे वंग: कलिंगै: सह'-- (एपिग्राफिका इंडिया जिल्द-2, पृ.11).
