Rangpur (रंगपुर) is an archaeological site in near Vanala on Saurashtra peninsula in Gujarat, western India. It is a site of Indus valley civilization. It is at Chuda Taluka in Surendranagar district in Gujarat.[1]

Location

Rangpur is a Village in Chuda Taluka in Surendranagar District of Gujarat State, India. It is located 54 KM towards South from District head quarters Surendranagar. 24 KM from Chuda. Rangpur Pin code is 363421 and postal head office is Limbdi. This Place is in the border of the Surendranagar District and Ahmadabad District. Ahmadabad District Ranpur is west towards this place.[2]

Lying on the tip between the Gulf of Khambhat and Gulf of Kutch, it belongs to the period of the Indus valley civilization, and lies to the northwest of the larger site of Lothal.[3]

It is the type site for the Rangpur culture, a regional form of the late phase of the Indus Valley Civilization that existed in Gujarat during the 2nd millennium BCE.

Excavation: Trail Diggings were conducted by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) during 1931 led by M.S.Vats. Later, Ghurye (1939), Dikshit (1947) and S. R. Rao (1953–56) excavated the site under ASI projects.

S.R.Rao has classified the deposits into four periods with three sub periods in Harappan Culture, Period II with an earlier Period, Microlithic and a Middle Paleolithic State (River sections) with points, scrapers and blades of jasper. The dates given by S.R.Rao are:

  • Period I - Microlithis unassociated with Pottery : 3000 BC
  • Period II - Harappan : 2000–1500 BC
  • Period II B - Late Harappan : 1500–1100 BC
  • Period II C - Transition Phase of Harappa : 1100–1000 BC
  • Period III - Lustrous Red Ware Period : 1000-800 BC.[3]

Architecture and town planning: Acacia wood was used in Rangpur for construction, tools and furniture.[4]

Artefacts found: Dishes with beaded rim and grooved shoulder, painted black - and redware and high-necked jars.[5] Evidence of shell working found.[6] Other artifacts found at the site include axes, beads of steatite and carnelian and Earthen wares.

Cultivation: Large quantity of plant remains were found at Rangpur. Bajra,[7] rice[8] (Period IIA) and Millet (Period HI) were found.[9]

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[10] ने लेख किया है ...2. रंगपुर (AS, p.773): गुजरात के काठियावाड़ प्रायद्वीप में यह ऐतिहासिक स्थान गोहिलवाड़ प्रांत में सुकभादर नदी के पश्चिम समुद्र में गिरने के स्थान से कुछ ऊपर की ओर स्थित है। यहाँ से 1935 तथा 1947 में उत्खनन द्वारा सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता के अवशेष प्रकाश में लाए गये थे। यहाँ पहली बार की खुदाई के अवशेषों से विद्वानों ने यह समझा था कि ये हड़प्पा सभ्यता के दक्षिणतम प्रसार के चिन्ह हैं, जिनका समय लगभग 2000 ई. पू. होना चाहिए। वर्ष 1944 ई. के जनवरी मास मे यहाँ पुरातत्त्व विभाग ने पुनः उत्खनन किया, जिससे अनेक अवशेष प्राप्त हुए। जिनमें प्रमुख थे- अलंकृत व चिकने मृदभांड, जिन पर हिरण तथा अन्य पशुओं के चित्र हैं; स्वर्ण तथा कीमती पत्थर की बनी हुईं गुरियां तथा धूप में सुखाई हुई ईंटे। यहाँ से भूमि की सतह के नीचे नालियों तथा कमरों के भी चिन्ह मिलें हैं। खुदाई से रंगपुर में अति प्राचीन अणुपाषाण युगीन सभ्यता के भी खंडहर मिले हैं (प्रायः 2000-1000 ई. पू.) इस सभ्यता का मूल स्थान बेबिलोनिया बताया जाता है। रंगपुरी के निकटवर्ती अन्य कई स्थानों से सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता के अवशेष प्रकाश में लाए गये हैं। (दे. नरमान, भंगोल, मधुपुर, वेनीवडार तथा मोटामचिलिया)
