Rao Manchand Nauhwar

Rao Manchand was a Jat chief of village Jartauli (in present day Aligarh district) during the reign of Ibrahim Khan Lodhi (3rd sultan of Lodhi dynasty). He was born in a Navharia Chauhan (or Nauhvar) clan of Jats.

History

Village Jartauli was the capital of Nauhwar Jats in those days. Later Rao Manchand alongside with many other Jat zamindars of Jartauli revolted against Sultan Ibrahim Khan Lodhi and after a while this rebel took serious turns and Umar Khan the son of Sikandar Sur was ordered to launch an attack on Rao Manchand in order to suppress the rebellion. However, fierce Jat forces eliminated Umar Khan and fortified themselves. The rebellion was finally crushed by Qasim Khan, the governer of Sambhal under sultan Ibrahim Khan Lodhi. In a battle Rao Manchand attained martyrdom fighting against Qasim' army. Also, Rao Manchand's sons Rao Ratiram Nauhwar and Nar Singh Nohwar survived.
Pathans occupied Jartauli, Noh (ancestral lands of Nauhwaria Jats) and surrounding areas, there a downfall in Jat dominance and suddenly like a strom Rao Ratiram Nauhwar appeared and defeated the Pathan army and won Noh area, then he built the famous fort of Bajna (Devanagari: बाजना, in present day Mathura) which was made the new capital of Nauhwar Jats under Rao Ratiram, his grandson Rao Amar Singh Nauhwar later conquered the fort of Khair (Deta Khurd, Aligarh district) and captured up to Khurja, he also played an important role in Jat-Mughal war of 1689-95 A.D.
