Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal

Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal (संदीप सिंह धालीवाल) was a Sikh Jat who was serving as a deputy to the Harris County sheriff in the United States of America, before attaining martyrdom on duty, during a routine police checking on 27 September 2019 at northwest Houston, Texas, the US.

Family

Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal was born in India, but later moved to the US with the whole family.

His father, Pyara Singh Dhaliwal, had served in the Indian Navy. His sister Rupinderjit Kaur is the Spring Vale ward Labour councillor. He was married to Harwinder Kaur Dhaliwal.

Life and carrer in the US

After moving to the US, he initially worked as a truck driver in Texas, but later decided to join the law enforcement. Before his martyrdom, he had served in the sheriff's department for around 10 years.

Death

The police investigation states that,

"Dhaliwal was shot in the back of the head by a convict who feared going back to prison, police say. His killing is not suspected of being a hate crime."

A wanted criminal, Robert Solis, who had jumped his parole, is the prime suspect for the murder of Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal. Robert Solis was arrested in next to no time after the death of Dhaliwal.

Congressional resolution in Dhaliwal's honour

A congressional resolution was put forward on 31 October 2019 in the US House of Representatives to honour him and his services. It was introduced by Congresswoman Lizze Fletcher, and was co-sponsored by 15 other Congressmen.

A sentence from the resolution reads,

"Dhaliwal served admirably while maintaining his Sikh articles of faith, including his turban (dastaar), steel bracelet (kara), and unshorn hair (kesh) without impediment, which have deep spiritual and moral significance."
