Somatirtha (सोमतीर्थ) refers to the name of a Tīrtha (pilgrim’s destination) mentioned in the Mahābhārata.

1) Somatīrtha (सोमतीर्थ).—An ancient holy place situated in Kurukṣetra. It is mentioned in Mahābhārata, Vana Parva, Chapter 83, Verse 19, that one could attain the fruits of the sacrifice of royal consecration by bathing in this holy bath.

2) Somatīrtha (सोमतीर्थ).—Another ancient holy bath situated in Kurukṣetra. In Mahābhārata, Vana Parva, Chapter 83, Stanza 114, it is mentioned that by bathing in this holy place, one could attain the world of Candra (Moon). (See under Prabhāsa Tīrtha also).

Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 81 mentions names of Tirthas (Pilgrims). Somatirtha (सॊमतीर्थ) (Tirtha) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.81.16). [1].....One should next, O king, repair to the tirtha called Somatirtha (सॊमतीर्थं) (III.81.16) in Jayanti. Bathing there one obtaineth the merit of Rajasuya sacrifice.


Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 81 mentions names of Tirthas (Pilgrims). Somatirtha (सॊमतीर्थ) (Tirtha) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.81.96).[2].....One should then, O best of men, proceed to the excellent tirtha called Somatirtha (सॊमतीर्थ) (III.81.96). Bathing there, O king, one obtaineth the region of Soma (Somaloka). One should next proceed, O king, to the tirtha called Saptasaraswata (सप्त सारस्वत) (III.81.97)....

Somatirtha (सॊमतीर्थ) (Tirtha) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.81.162).[3].....The pilgrim then, O king, bathing in the tirtha of Somatirtha (सॊमतीर्थ) (III.81.162), obtaineth, without doubt, the region of Soma (Somaloka).


Anusasana Parva/Book XIII Chapter 26 mentions the sacred waters on the earth. Brahmasara (ब्रह्मसर) (Tirtha)/(Pond) is mentioned in Mahabharata (XIII.26.38).[4]..... Repairing to Brahmasaras as also to the Bhagirathi and bathing there and offering oblations to the Pitris every day for a full month, abstaining from food all the while, one is sure to attain to the region of Soma (Somaloka).

सोमतीर्थ

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[5] ने लेख किया है ... सोमतीर्थ (AS, p.989): कालिदास रचित अभिज्ञान शाकुंतलम् प्रथम अंक मेंइस तीर्थ का उल्लेख है. जिस समय दुष्यंत शकुंतला से मिले थे कणव ऋषि सोमतीर्थ की यात्रा के लिए गए थे-- 'इदानीमेव दुहितरं शकुन्तलाम् अतिथिसत्काराय संदिश्य दैवमस्या: प्रतिकूलं शमयितुं सोमतीर्थं गत:'. संभवत: प्रभासपाटन (काठियावाड़, गुजरात) के निकट सोमनाथ के प्राचीन तीर्थ को ही कालिदास ने सोमतीर्थ कहा है. किंतु यह गढ़वाल की पहाड़ियों में स्थित सोनप्रयाग नामक तीर्थ भी हो सकता है (देखें सोमनदी), जो कण्व आश्रम (=मंडावर, जिला बिजनौर उत्तर प्रदेश) के निकट ही है. पौराणिक किंवदंती के अनुसार कुरुक्षेत्र में भी एक तीर्थ इस नाम का था जहां कार्तिकेय ने तारकासुर को मारा था (महाभारत शल्य पर्व, 44, 52)
