The Incidence

Three Indian Blue Helmets, Havildar Omkar Singh, Nayak Suraj Bhagwan Budania and Sepoy Parvinder Singh, were killed on 18 August in the overnight ambush of a United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) base in Kirumba, North Kivu province. The base was attacked shortly before 2 a.m. by up to 60 men armed with machetes and spears. Although the peacekeepers engaged with the attackers, forcing them to retreat, seven Indian soldiers were also injured in the attack. [2]

Goma, 19 August 2010 - A ceremony in honor of the three Indian soldiers killed yesterday in an attack in MONUSCO base in Kirumba was held today at the international airport of Goma in the presence of military and civilian authorities of the mission and of the province of North Kivu who paid a glowing tribute to the sacrifice of these soldiers of peace.

The bodies of the three peacekeepers - Sergeant Omkar Singh, Corporal Suraj Bhagwan Budania and Sepoy Parvinder Singh – were repatriated to their country today. MONUSCO Head of Goma Office Ms Hiroute Gebre Sellasie, who was speaking on behalf of the Special Representative of the Secretary General in the DRC, Roger Meece, said in her speech that this incident though painful will not weaken MONUSCO determination in its work of pacification and stabilization of the region.

For its part, the governor of the province of North Kivu, Julien Paluku, said that a board of inquiry was already created to shed light on the attackers' identify as well as on their mobile.

In their words of condolence, MONUSCO Force Commander, Lieutenant General Prakask Chander and Brigade Commander in North Kivu, General Eaja Kumar Sharma, have condemned this act. However, they indicated that the North Kivu Brigade remained determined to continue the struggle for peace, human dignity and development in the DRC.

The ceremony concluded by observing two minutes silence in memory of the three Indian soldiers .

Health sub-centre will be named after the martyr

A new health sub-centre will be named after a martyr soldier in a village of Sikar district, which has produced nine martyrs. The health department has approved the proposal of naming the health sub-centre after martyr Suraj Bhagwan Budania.

Deenwa Ladkhani, a village in Fatehpur area of Sikar district, is a village of martyrs. It has schools named after martyrs. Now, as the new sub-centre will also be named after martyrs. In this village of martyrs, all government schools and health centres are named after martyrs.

"We have sent the proposal to the directorate of health to name Deenwa Ladkhani after a martyr. The directorate has approved the proposal," Dr Shyam Sundar Agarwal, chief medical health officer (Sikar) said.


The decision for christening the name of sub-centre on Budania's name, has brought rejoice in his family. "We have been demanding that a government building like sub-centre should be named after martyr Budania," Budania's brother Rajesh Budania said.

He said that Suraj Bhagwan Budania martyred on August 18, 2010, in an ambush of a United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) in South Africa.

नायक सूरज भगवान बुडानिया राजस्थान के सीकर जिले की फतेहपुर तहसील के दीनवा लाडखानी गांव के निवासी थे। वह भारतीय सेना की डोगरा रेजिमेंट की 5 बटालियन में सेवारत थे।

वर्ष 2010 में वह प्रतिनियुक्ति पर अपनी बटालियन के साथ संयुक्त राष्ट्र शांति मिशन में दक्षिण अफ्रीका में तैनात थे।

18 अगस्त 2010 को डेमोक्रेटिक रिपब्लिक ऑफ द कांगो में अपना कर्तव्य निर्वहन करते हुए नायक सूरज भगवान वीरगति को प्राप्त हुए थे।
