Vellur

Vellur (वेल्लूर) is a village in the Orathanadu taluk of Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, India.

History
The name Vellur is derived from the Tamil words: Vel meaning "spear", Oor – "village"; thus reading "village of spear". Actually the shape of Vellur's vicinity including such boroughs as Periyakumilai, Mela theru, Keelatheru, Alathan kudikadu, Kothaiyakadu, and Edatheru resembles that of a spear. In Kerala also there is a village name as vellur. It is situated in Kannur district of Kerala.
The name is also said to have originated from Vel (spear – வேல்) which is the main weapon of the Hindu deity Murugan or "Velayudayaan" (one who bears the spear). The word then literally means "The place of Murugan". In this village most people belong to saivasamayam and are also called Thandavamurthi etc.
Formerly Orathanadu Taluk was subdivided into 18 Nadus (group of villages), and the 18 Nadus had each a Nattamai. If there occurred any quarrel that the village was unable to regulate by itself, the issue was passed onto and the judgement given by the Nattamai. Among the Nadus were Papanadu, Uranthainadu, Vellur Nadu, Konur Nadu, Kakkarai Nadu, Thennamar Nadu etc. one of the Famous Church is there, St Xavier church at vellur, It's Contrcted by Father Gringal . It is Oldest church in Virudhunagar District .
वेल्लूर
वेल्लूर (AS, p.877): तमिलनाडु राज्य में है। वेल्लूर का प्राचीन नाम वेलापुर है। वेल्लूर एक मध्ययुगीन दुर्ग के लिए प्रख्यात है, जो 1274 ई. में बोम्मी रेड्डी ने बनवाया था। यह व्यक्ति भद्राचल से यहाँ आकर बस गया था। विजयनगर के नरेशों के समय इस स्थान की बहुत उन्नति हुई। 17वीं शती के मध्य में बीजापुर के सुल्तानों ने यहाँ पर आक्रमण करके दुर्ग का घेरा डाला। 1676 ई. में मराठों ने इस स्थान पर अधिकार कर लिया किन्तु 1707 ई. में मुग़ल सेनापति दाऊद ने इसे उनसे छीन लिया। 1760 ई. में यहाँ पर अंग्रेज़ों का आधिपत्य हो गया। टीपू सुल्तान की मृत्यु के पश्चात् उसके परिवार के सदस्यों को यहीं पर रखा गया था। इन्होंने क़िले में स्थित भारतीय सैनिकों को अंग्रेज़ों के विरुद्ध बग़ावत करने के लिए उकसाया था। बेल्लूर दुर्ग के अन्दर एक बहुत सुन्दर मन्दिर स्थित है, जिसे अंग्रेज़ों की छावनी बनने से बहुत क्षति पहुँची। इसके प्रवेश द्वार पर शार्दूल–दानवों और अश्वारोहियों की मूर्तियाँ हैं। मण्डपों के स्तम्भों की शिल्पकारी अनोखी जान पड़ती है। फ़र्ग्यूसन के मत में यह मन्दिर 13वीं या 14वीं शती का जान पड़ता है।[1]
