Virender Singh Sangwan
Dr Virender Singh Sangwan is the Head Cornea & Anterior Segment in LV Prasad Eye Institute(LVPEI),Banjara Hills' Hyderabad-500034. He is the receipent of year 2006's Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (SSB) in Medical Sciences. This prize is given to scientists for their outstanding scientific contributions made primarily in India during the last 5 years, to those who are not more than 45 years of age. The prize comprises a citation, a plaque and a cash award of RS. 2.0 Lakhs. Dr.Sangwan is also the Secretary of the Alumni Forum.
Virender Singh Sangwan completed his medical graduate degree from Maharshi Dayanand University, Haryana, in 1986 and MS Ophthalmology in 1991. He did a fellowship in Cornea & Anterior Segment at L V Prasad Eye Institute, and another in Immunology & Uveitis Services at Harvard Medical School, USA. Now he is Director of Cornea & Anterior Segment, Ocular Immunology & Uveitis Services at L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. He is also Adjunct Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, University of Rochester, New York, USA.
Dr Sangwan has worked as Field Medical Director at ORBIS International, Inc., New York and chief fellow, immunology & uveitis service of Harvard Medical School, Boston. He has published 58 papers in peer-reviewed journals and given almost a hundred presentations at national and international conferences. He has served as faculty for workshops and instruction courses on uveitis, limbal stem cell deficiency and limbal stem cell transplantation, nationally and internationally. He is reviewer for the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, Cornea, Comprehensive Ophthalmology Update and Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology.
He is on the editorial board of International Ophthalmology. He is an honorary member of the North African Centre of Sight, National Ophthalmic Society of El Salvador and National Ophthalmic Society of Peru. He is the country director for International Ocular Surface Society and Secretary of Eye Bank Association of India. He is also founder secretary/treasurer of Uveitis Society of India and LVPEI Alumni Association.
