Penukonda (पेनुकोंडा) is a town in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is located on Ram Van Gaman Path

Location

It is 70 km away from Anantapur (Officially: Anantapuramu) town. According to The Imperial Gazetteer of India, Penukonda was a subdivision and taluk of Anantapur district in Madras province. The Penner River flows along its western and Chitravati river along its eastern boundary.

History

This region was controlled at different points in history by the Hoysalas, Chalukyas, Vijayanagar, Nawabs, Maratha chieftain Murari Rao, Tipu Sultan, Nizam and eventually came under British rule after it was ceded to the British by the Nizam of Hyderabad. It was a melting pot of different religions but the town and fort were established by early Hoysala kings, who were practitioners of Jainism.

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर ने लेख किया है .....पेनुकोंडा, मैसूर, (AS, p.577): यहां बिजयनगर नरेशों (15 वीं 16 वीं शती) की ग्रीष्मकालीन राजधानी थी. लोगों का परंपरागत विश्वास है कि यहां श्रीरामचंद्र ने अपने वनवास काल का कुछ समय बिताया था जिसके स्मारक कई प्राचीन मंदिर हैं. एक शिव मंदिर भी है.
