Banas River (बनास) flows in Rajasthan state in western India. It is a tributary of the Chambal River, which in turn flows into the Yamuna, a tributary of the Ganges. The Banas is approximately 512 kms in length.[1]

The Banas originates in the Khamnor Hills of the Aravalli Range, about 5 km from Kumbhalgarh in Rajsamand district.

It flows northeast through the districts Rajsamand District, Chittorgarh District, Bhilwara District in Mewar region of Rajasthan, then Tonk District, and Sawai Madhopur District and meets the Chambal near the village of Rameshwar in Sawai Madhopur District.[2]

Major tributaries

Major tributaries include the right bank tributaries of Berach and Menali and the left bank tributaries of Kothari River, Khari River, Dai River, Dheel River, Sohadara, Morel and Kalisil.[3]

The Banas drains a basin of 45,833 km², and lies entirely within Rajasthan. It is a seasonal river that dries up during the summer, but it is nonetheless used for irrigation.[4] The Bisalpur-Jaipur project completed by the Government of Rajasthan in 2009 provides drinking water from the Banas to Jaipur city.[5] Banas drains the east slope of the central portion of the Aravalli Range, and the basin includes all or part of Ajmer, Bhilwara, Bundi, Chittorgarh, Dausa, Jaipur, Pali, Rajsamand, Sawai Madhopur, Tonk, and Udaipur districts.[6]

बनास नदी

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[7] ने लेख किया है .....बनास नदी (AS, p.607): राजस्थान की एक नदी जिसका प्राचीन नाम पर्णाश या पर्णाशा है-- 'चर्मण्वती तथा चैव पर्णाशा च महानदी'-- महाभारत सभा. 9.20. श्री न. ला. डे ने बनास का प्राचीन नाम विनाशिनी बताया है.

बनास नदी परिचय

बनास नदी राजस्थान, पश्चिमोत्तर भारत में प्रवाहित होने वाली नदी है। यह नदी चम्बल नदी की सहायक नदी है। बनास एक मात्र ऐसी नदी है, जो अपना संपूर्ण चक्र राजस्थान में ही पूरा करती है। 'बनास' अर्थात् "वन की आशा" के रूप में जानी जाने वाली यह नदी उदयपुर ज़िले के अरावली पर्वत श्रेणियों में कुंभलगढ़ के पास खमनौर की पहाड़ियों से निकलती है।

उद्गम तथा प्रवाह क्षेत्र: इस नदी की घाटी में प्राचीन मानव सभ्यता के अनेक प्रकार के प्रस्तर के उपकरण प्राप्त हुए हैं। बनास नदी का उद्गम कुंभलगढ़ के निकट अरावली पर्वत मालाओं में है। यह अरावली पर्वतमाला को चीरकर अपना रास्ता बनाती है। इसके बाद पूर्वोत्तर की ओर बढ़ते हुए यह मैदानों तक पहुँचती है। नदी नाथद्वारा, कंकरोली, राजसमंद और भीलवाड़ा ज़िले में बहती हुई टौंक, सवाई माधोपुर के पश्चात् रामेश्वरम के नजदीक चंबल नदी में गिर जाती है।

सहायक नदियाँ: बनास को मौसमी नदी के रूप में जाना जाता है। यह गर्मी के समय अक्सर सूखी रहती है, लेकिन इसके बावजूद यह सिंचाई का मुख्य स्रोत है। इसकी समूची घाटी में मिट्टी के बहाव से कई स्थानों में अनुपजाऊ भूमि का निर्माण हो गया। इसकी लंबाई लगभग 480 किलोमीटर है। इसकी सहायक नदियों में बेडच, कोठरी, मांसी, खारी, मुरेल व धुन्ध हैं।

बेडच नदी 190 किलोमीटर लंबी है तथा गोगंडा पहाड़ियों, उदयपुर से निकलती है। कोठारी नदी उत्तरी राजसमंद ज़िले की दिवेर पहाड़ियों से निकलती है। यह 145 किलोमीटर लंबी है तथा उदयपुर, भीलवाड़ा में बहती हुई बनास में मिल जाती है। खारी नदी 80 किलोमीटर लंबी है तथा राजसमंद के बिजराल की पहाड़ियों से निकलकर देवली (टौंक) के नज़दीक बनास में मिल जाती है।
