Bhatta, the Jat-dominated that has been the epicentre of a bloody battle over land acquisition, is home to several retired police and army personnel. For a population of around 10,000 people, this village that comes under the Jewar assembly constituency has more than 50 licensed arms. And these were used to a great effect in thwarting off armed police forces in the gun battle on Saturday.

Land row politics: Chakka jam and arrests

13 May 2011. Times of India: [2] GREATER NOIDA: For the sixth day now, Bhatta Parsaul continues to be in the eye of the agitation storm. Even as the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister is vehemently denying that the villagers are being short changed, considering that UP is scheduled to vote next year, Bhatta Parsaul undoubtedly has emerged as the new political hot bed. Congress leaders and workers attempted a statewide chakka jam on Thursday. Beginning from Bhangel in Noida, hundreds of state Congress party workers and their supporters gathered at noon planning to march across Noida and Greater Noida and finally staging a dharna at Bhatta Parsaul. However, the crowd was detained by the city police, forced into police vehicles and taken away. The Congress had announced a statewide chakka jam to protest Rahul Gandhi's arrest in Bhatta Parsaul Wednesday night and in support of farmers' demands in western UP. LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan was also arrested by the Noida city police and later released for trying to enter Bhatta Parsaul village. Paswan was stopped by police at the DND flyover and prevented from proceeding towards the village, the epicentre of the protest. Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley were also taken into preventive custody by Uttar Pradesh Police in Ghaziabad for agitating in support of farmers of Bhatta Parsaul village. Singh along with Jaitley was taken into custody soon after he began his 24-hour hunger strike in Ghaziabad in support of the farmers. Social activist Medha Patkar was also arrested just while she was trying to enter Bhatta Parsaul with her supporters. Patkar said she was going to meet the villagers and take stock of their grievances. She was taken to Dankaur Police station and released later. In spite of the administration having passed prohibitory orders under sec 144 of the CrPC, a team of National Commission of Women led by Yasmeen Abrar, acting chairperson, also went into the village at noon. Abrar and her team went from house to house meeting villagers. "The situation inside the village is very bleak. Most of the menfolk from the village are still missing and women are feeling vulnerable. The atrocities committed by the PAC are shameful, people have been beaten up, killed and then burnt. We must have an independent probe into the matter," she said. The National Human Rights Commission, which has received complaints of human rights violations in the Bhatta Parsaul village in Greater Noida, will send an investigative team to the village, a statement said Thursday. "In several complaints received in the commission, it has been alleged that the police mercilessly lathicharged the farmers who were demanding more compensation for their land which is being acquired by the state government. In view of the gravity of the situation, the commission has decided to depute its investigation team for conducting an on-the-spot inquiry in the matter," the NHRC statement said. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh, who was arrested and released late last night along with Rahul Gandhi, said that their "fight for the farmers" cause was not over yet. Singh added that the Congress will continue fighting against the May 7 incident of the farmers being attacked by the UP government and police, which lead to four deaths and several others injured. "I have not seen such kind of brutal atrocities in my 40 years of political career," he added. Mayawati, meanwhile, has launched a counter offensive against opposition parties, accusing them of provoking the farmers of Bhatta-Parsaul into violence and charged the Centre with doing nothing to bring a new law for land acquisition. She claimed that the villagers of Bhatta-Parsaul, have made no demand and the situation there was "totally peaceful". Meanwhile, in what appeared to be a breach in Rahul Gandhi's security, a youth armed with a country made pistol was detained at Kasna police station where Rahul Gandhi was taken after being arrested from Bhatta-Parsaul Wednesday night. The police though have dismissed the incident and claim that the youth was "shadowing one of the local MPs."
