Manveer Singh Tewatia is the Hero in Bhatta Parsaul Land Acquisition Movement in Uttar Pradesh.

The proposed 165-km long Yamuna Expressway between Delhi and Agra is expected to reduce the driving time between the two cities by one hour. It will pass through the districts of Gautam Buddha Nagar, Aligarh, Mahamaya Nagar (Hathras) and Mathura. The project involves the acquisition of 115 villages in these four districts.

A total of 2,500 hectare land will have to be acquired for the development of the expressway -- 500 hectares each in Noida, Aligarh and Agra and 1,000 hectares in Gautam Buddha Nagar.

Four farmers were injured on Monday when personnel of the Uttar Pradesh police opened fire on them while they were participating in a sit-in demonstration to demand higher compensation for the acquisition of their land. The farmers were demanding a higher price from the state government, which had acquired their land in Greater Noida to build a fast-track road connecting Delhi and Agra.

The police claimed that the farmers turned violent first, and the policemen had merely retaliated. "The police was compelled to open fire only after the farmers attacked the policemen," said Amitabh Yash, superintendent of police of Gautam Budh Nagar.

Nearly 600 farmers from 17 local villages were demanding parity in monetary compensation with farmers whose land had been acquired in Noida for the purpose.

"We were promised parity, after which we lifted our dharna outside the district magistrate's office in December. But nothing has been done so far by the administration," said Manveer Singh Tewatia, who is leading the demonstration.

To prevent the farmers from making a direct appeal to Chief Minister Mayawati, who had visited the district on Sunday, the police had arrested Tewatia last week. The furious farmers captured the sub-divisional magistrate and the local tehsildar and have since held them hostage.

The protesting farmers made it clear that they would not let the two government officials go free unless Tewatia was released by the policemen.

Though the police released Tewatia on Sunday morning, the local administration did not allow farmers' representatives to meet the chief minister. The local farmers have been holding the dharna since December 17.

Tewatia sent to judicial custody over land stir (Lead)

10 July 2011, IANS: Noida, July 10 (IANS) Farmer leader Manveer Singh Tewatia, arrested from New Delhi for allegedly instigating violence in Bhatta-Parsaul in May, was Sunday sent to judicial custody by a court here. Tewatia was presented before Warrant Magistrate Anil Kumar Yadav who sent him to judicial custody. Tewatia told the court that he feared for his life inside the jail. He requested the court to get a medical examination done on him before his admission to the Dasna Jail at Ghaziabad.

He was accompanied by his mother Harbeeri Devi, wife Nutan and another farmer Premveer Tewatia, who was also sent to jail earlier after he was named in an police case at Dankore in the wake violence in May. Premveer is now out on bail. Several farmers from nearby districts also reached the court complex to support Manveer Tewatia and shouted slogans. They, however, remained outside the court compound.

The farmer leader’s family claimed that he was implicated by the state government for supporting the peasants’ struggle against Land Acquisition. They asserted that he was not a criminal. He only led a farmers’ movement.

“Had he been here in Uttar Pradesh, police would have killed him in encounter. He saw a danger to his life and this is why he was hiding in Delhi. Now that he is arrested, we fear that he could be killed like doctor Sachan in Lucknow jail. There is a danger to his life. It seems supporting farmers’ cause is a crime in this state,” said Manveer Tewatia’s wife Nutan.

The May violence between agitating farmers and police had left four people dead and about 15, including Gautam Budh Nagar District Magistrate Deepak Agrawal, injured.

Rs.50,000 reward announced for farmer leader

08 May 2011 by IANS: Greater Noida. The Uttar Pradesh government Sunday announced a reward of Rs.50,000 for the arrest of farmer leader Manvir Singh Teotia who has been blamed for violence over land takeover that left three dead.

Protests by farmers resisting the acquisition of land turned violent Saturday when police tried to rescue three Uttar Pradesh Roadways employees held hostage by farmers in Bhatta Parsaul village. This led to exchange of gunfire between the Uttar Pradesh Police and farmers. Two policemen and a farmer were killed. The hostages escaped.

Fifteen people were injured, including Deepak Agrawal, the district magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar.
