Bhimashankar (भीमशंकर) is a Jyotirlinga shrine located 50 km northwest of Khed (alias Rajgurunagar), near Pune, in India.

Location
It is located 127 km from Shivajinagar (in Pune) in the Ghat region of the Sahyadri Mountains. Bhīmāshankar is also the source of the Bhima River, which flows southeast and merges with the Krishna river near Raichur.

Architecture
The Bhimashankar temple is a composite of old and new structures in the Nagara style of architecture. It shows the excellency of the skills achieved by ancient Vishwakarma sculptors. It is a modest yet graceful temple and it dates back to the 13th century while the sabhamandap was built in the 18th century by Nana Phadnavis. The shikhara was built by Nana Phadnavis. The great Maratha ruler Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj is said to have made endowments to this temple to facilitate worship services. As with other Shiva temples in this area, the sanctum is at a lower level.
Although the structure here is fairly new, the shrine Bhimashankaram (and the Bhimarathi river) have been referred to in literature dating back to the 13th century CE. Saint Jnaneshwar is said to have visited Tryambakeshwar and Bhimashankar.
A unique bell (Roman style) can be seen in front of the temple. This bell has an idol of Mother Mary with Jesus. This large bell was presented by Chimaji Appa (Brother of Bajirao Peshwa I and uncle of Nanasaheb Peshwa). On 16 May 1739, Chimaji Appa collected five large bells after he won a war against the Portuguese from the Vasai Fort. He offered one here at Bhimashankar and the others at Menavali near Wai in front of a Shiva Temple on the banks of the Krishna river, Banshanker temple (Pune), Omkareshwar Temple (Pune) and Ramlinga temple (Shirur).

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[1] ने लेख किया है ...भीमशंकर (AS, p.672): महाराष्ट्र में मुंबई से पूर्व की ओर 70 मील तथा पुणे से उत्तर की ओर 43 मील पर भीमाशंकर का मंदिर स्थित है जिसकी गणना द्वादश ज्योतिर्लिंगों में की जाती है. यह भीमा नदी के तट पर और सह्याद्री पर्वत पर स्थित है. पुराणों में इस मंदिर की स्थिति डाकिनी ग्राम में मानी है ('डाकिन्यां भीमशंकरम्'). भीम नदी भीमशंकर पर्वत से ही निकलती है. भीमशंकर पर्वत सह्याद्री का एक शिखर है.
भीमशंकरपरिचय
भीमाशंकर मंदिर भोरगिरि गांव खेड़ से 50 कि.मि. उत्तर-पश्चिम पुणे से 110 कि.मि में स्थित है। यह पश्चिमी घाट के सह्याद्रि पर्वत पर स्थित है। यहीं से भीमा नदी भी निकलती है। यह दक्षिण पश्चिम दिशा में बहती हुई रायचूर जिले में कृष्णा नदी से जा मिलती है। यहां भगवान शिव का प्रसिद्ध ज्योतिर्लिंग है।
प्रसिद्ध धार्मिक केंद्र भीमाशंकर मंदिर महाराष्ट्र में पुणे से करीब 100 किलोमीटर दूर स्थित सह्याद्रि नामक पर्वत पर है। यह स्थान नासिक से लगभग 120 मील दूर है। यह मंदिर भारत में पाए जाने वाले बारह ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक है। 3,250 फीट की ऊंचाई पर स्थित इस मंदिर का शिवलिंग काफी मोटा है। इसलिए इसे मोटेश्वर महादेव के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। इसी मंदिर के पास से भीमा नामक एक नदी भी बहती है जो कृष्णा नदी में जाकर मिलती है।
मंदिर की संरचना: भीमाशंकर मंदिर नागर शैली की वास्तुकला से बनी एक प्राचीन और नई संरचनाओं का समिश्रण है। इस मंदिर से प्राचीन विश्वकर्मा वास्तुशिल्पियों की कौशल श्रेष्ठता का पता चलता है। इस सुंदर मंदिर का शिखर नाना फड़नवीस द्वारा 18वीं सदी में बनाया गया था। कहा जाता है कि महान मराठा शासक शिवाजी ने इस मंदिर की पूजा के लिए कई तरह की सुविधाएं प्रदान की।
नाना फड़नवीस द्वारा निर्मित हेमादपंथि की संरचना में बनाया गया एक बड़ा घंटा भीमशंकर की एक विशेषता है। अगर आप यहां जाएं तो आपको हनुमान झील, गुप्त भीमशंकर, भीमा नदी की उत्पत्ति, नागफनी, बॉम्बे प्वाइंट, साक्षी विनायक जैसे स्थानों का दौरा करने का मौका मिल सकता है। भीमशंकर लाल वन क्षेत्र और वन्यजीव अभयारण्य द्वारा संरक्षित है जहां पक्षियों, जानवरों, फूलों, पौधों की भरमार है। यह जगह श्रद्धालुओं के साथ-साथ ट्रैकर्स प्रेमियों के लिए भी उपयोगी है। यह मंदिर पुणे में बहुत ही प्रसिद्ध है। यहां दुनिया भर से लोग इस मंदिर को देखने और पूजा करने के लिए आते हैं। भीमाशंकर मंदिर के पास कमलजा मंदिर है। कमलजा पार्वती जी का अवतार हैं। इस मंदिर में भी श्रद्धालुओं की भीड़ लगती है।
