Devakuta (देवकूट) refers to the name of a Tīrtha mentioned in the Mahābhārata (II.82.122). Devakuta is mountain is mentioned in Vishnu Purana (2.2.40).

History

Pattiseema is a village in Polavaram mandal of West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, India. It is located on the bank of the Godavari River. It is a site of historical importance for Hindus. Famous temple named Sri Veerabhadra Swamy Temple is picturesquely located on a hillock known as Devakuta Parvata located on an island in the midst of Godavari River.[1]

In Mahavansha

Mahavansa/Chapter 15 ....`By (the power of) the demons pestilence arose here among the people. When Kakusandha, who was gifted with the ten powers,' knew of this misery, then, to bring it to an end and to achieve the converting of beings and progress of the doctrine in this island, he, urged on by the might of his compassion, came through the air surrounded by forty thousand (disciples) like to him, and stood on the Devakuta-mountain. By the power of the Sambuddha, O great king, the pestilence ceased then here over the whole island.

In Mahabharata

Devakuta (देवकूट) (Tirtha) in Mahabharata (III.82.122)

Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 82 mentions names Pilgrims . Devakuta (देवकूट) (Tirtha) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.82.122). [2].... Proceeding next to Devakuta (देवकूट) (III.82.122) that is resorted to by celestial Rishis, one acquireth the merit of the horse-sacrifice, and also delivereth his race.

देवकूट

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[3] ने लेख किया है ...देवकूट (AS, p.441) विष्णु पुराण के अनुसार एक मर्यादा पर्वत है- 'जठरोदेवकूटश्च मर्यादा पर्वतावुभो तो दक्षिणोत्तरायामावानीलनिषधायतो'। विष्णु पुराण 2, 2, 40. यह पर्वत उत्तर में निषध तक फैला हुआ है।

जठर देश

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[4] ने लेख किया है ...जठर देश (AS, p.354) का उल्लेख विष्णु पुराण 2, 2, 29 में हुआ है- 'मेरोरनन्तरांगेषु जठरादिष्ववस्थिता: शंखकूटाऽथ ऋषभो हंसो नागस्तथापर: कालंजाद्याश्च तथा उत्तरकेसराचला:' अर्थात् "मेरु के अति समीप और जठर आदि देशों में स्थित शंखकूट, ऋषभ, हंस, नाग और कलंज आदि पर्वत उत्तर दिशा के केसराचल हैं। यदि मेरु या सुमेरु को उत्तरी ध्रुव का प्रदेश माना जाए तो जठर को वर्तमान साइबेरिया में स्थित मानना चाहिए। किंतु विष्णु पुराण का यह वर्णन बहुत अंशों में काल्पनिक जान पड़ता है। जठर पर्वत का भी उल्लेख विष्णु पुराण 2,2,20 में है- 'जठरो देवकूटश्च मर्यादा पर्वतावुभौ तौ दक्षिणोत्तरायामावानील निषधायतौ।'
