Kain (काइन) Kaen/Káín (काईन) Cain (काइन) is a gotra of Jats [1] found in Afghanistan/India/Iran.

Origin

It is very interesting to find rare gotras. Kain is a gotra of Jats. These people are one of Nagavanshi Jats. Nagavanshi Jat clans from very interior areas of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and southern Rajasthan. Many historians and academics have asserted that the Jats are descendants of Aryans, Scythians, or other ancient people that arrived and lived in northern India at one time. These (Kain) people being in remote areas could not be exterminated hence survived but lesser in population.

The clan is also based on place in Iran called Qaen (Persian: قائن‎, also Romanized as Ghayen, Qayen or Ghaen) is a city in and the capital of Qaen County, in South Khorasan Province, Iran. Qaen is also called the City of Saffron. Qaen is a place of great antiquity and complex history.

Mention by Pliny

Pliny[3] mentions The Seres.... The first river that is known in their territory is the Psitharas,9 next to that the Cambari, and the third the Laros; after which we come to the Promontory of Chryse,10 the Gulf of Cynaba, the river Atianos, and the nation of the Attacori on the gulf of that name, a people protected by their sunny hills from all noxious blasts, and living in a climate of the same temperature as that of the Hyperborei. Amometus has written a work entirely devoted to the history of these people, just as Hecatæus has done in his treatise on the Hyperborei.

9 Ptolemy speaks of it as the Œchordas.

10 The headland of Malacca, in the Aurea Chersonnesns, was also called by this name, but it is hardly probable that that is the place here meant.

Mention by Pliny

Pliny[4] mentions Arabia....We then (after the island of Tylos = Bahrain‎‎) come to the island of Asclie, and the nations of the Nocheti, the Zurazi, the Borgodi, the Catharrei, the Nomades, and then the river Cynos20.

20 Hardouin takes this to be that which by the Arabians is called by the name of Falg.

History

Sir H. M. Elliot and John Dowson[5] mention the Events of the Year 422 H. Investiture of Khwaja Ahmad Hasan. ... Khwaja Ahmad Hasan had got a garment made after the old fashion, and a turban of Naishapur or Kain, and in these people always saw this great man dressed. May God approve him ! I have heard from his companions, such as Bu Ibrahim Kaini, that he had his reception dress and twenty or thirty other garments all made of the same colour, and these he used to wear for a year, so that people thought that he had only one dress, and used to express their surprise that the garment did not wear or fade. There were no bounds to his manliness, industry, and magnanimity. I shall make some mention of them hereafter in their appropriate place. When the year had passed, he had twenty or thirty more garments made, and put them in the wardrobe.

This day, when he came to see the king, the court broke up, and Sultan Mas'ud held a private conference with the minister, which lasted till the time of mid-day prayer.

Sir H. M. Elliot and John Dowson[6] mention that Bu Muhammad Káíní, who was his old private secretary, and in the days of his misfortune had, by the Amir Mahmud's order, served under Khwaja Abu-l Kasim and afterwards under Diwan-Hasnak in the same capacity, and secretary Ibrahim Baihaki, who attended the minister's office ; these two persons were called by the Khwaja who said to them — " Secretaries must needs be attentive to orders. I place my confidence in you. To morrow you must attend the office and engage in writing ; bring also with you scholars and assistants."
