Major Balbir Singh Poonia, Vir Chakra
Major Balbir Singh Poonia (18.4.1939-21.2.2021) was born on 18 April 1939 at village Paintawas Khurd, Distt. Bhiwani (now in distt. Charkhi Dadri) to Ch. Man Singh and Goghdi Devi. He is the eldest of 3 brothers and a sister.
Education
He did his schooling from KG School Ajmer.
Joined Army
He was commissioned into 7 RAJ RIF on 10 June 1962 from IMA.
He got married to Sushila, D/o Lt Col Subha Chand Ahlawat and Chandri Ahlawat of vill Gochhi in 1966. He has 2 sons and 2 daughters. He commanded 3 RAJ RIF. He superannuated in 1991.
Awarded Vir Chakra in 1971 War
A battalion of Rajputana Rifles was given the task of capturing an enemy post in the Eastern Sector. Immediately after the objective was captured, the enemy launched a fierce counter-attack, supported by heavy artillery and mortar fire, in which the commanding officer was injured and the battery commander killed. At this stage Major Balbir Singh Poonia took charge of the situation and charged the advancing enemy, disorganizing his assault and restored the situation. In this action, Major Poonia displayed indomitable courage, leadership and devotion to duty of a high order.
He was awarded the Vir Chakra on 15 August 1972.
Death
He left for heavenly abode on 21 Feb 2021.
