Nahar Singh Dhankar

Nahar Singh Dhankar (20-08-1980 - 18-08-2003) became martyr of militancy on 18-08-2003 in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. He was awarded Sena Medal (Posthumously) for his act of bravery. He was from Seehi village in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh.

Paratrooper Nahar Singh was born on 20 August 1980 in the family of Chaudhary Girraj Dhankar and Smt. Kasturi Devi. He belonged to Sehi village in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh and was serving with the 10 Para (SF) battalion of the Parachute Regiment of the Indian Army. In the year 2003, he was posted in Jammu and Kashmir.

Paratrooper Nahar Singh was leading Scout of a detachment of Six Commandos tasked for a special mission. On 18 August 2003, at 0545 hours, in an area in District Pulwama, Jammu & Kashmir, Paratrooper Nahar Singh saw a group of three persons moving towards him.

Their weapons were hidden. He challenged these persons, but they opened fire and attempted to break contact and escape. Paratrooper Nahar Singh rushed from cover to cover and engaged them in a fierce fire fight.

While moving, he received a bullet in his shoulder. Undaunted, in pain, but with tremendous courage, he continued his advance and killed two terrorists. He was hit again in the abdomen and succumbed to his injuries on the battlefield.

For his courage, leadership and supreme sacrifice, Paratrooper Nahar Singh is awarded 'Sena Medal (Gallantry) (Posthumous)'.

पैराट्रूपर नाहर सिंह का जन्म 20 अगस्त 1980 को चौधरी गिर्राज धनकड़ एवं श्रीमती कस्तूरी देवी के परिवार में हुआ था। वह उत्तरप्रदेश के मथुरा जिले के सेही गांव के निवासी थे और भारतीय सेना की पैराशूट रेजिमेंट की 10 पैरा (SF) बटालियन में सेवारत थे। वर्ष 2003 में वह जम्मू-कश्मीर में तैनात थे।

17-18 अगस्त 2003 की रात्रि को पैराट्रूपर नाहर सिंह छः कमांडो के एक दल का नेतृत्व कर रहे थे। उन्हें जम्मू-कश्मीर में पुलवामा जिले के क्षेत्र में एक विशेष मिशन निष्पादित करने का उत्तरदायित्व दिया गया था। आठ घंटों तक जंगल व पहाड़ी क्षेत्र में चलने के पश्चात 18 अगस्त की भोर में 4:30 बजे यह टुकड़ी लक्षित क्षेत्र में पहुँची और वहां घात (AMBUSH) लगाकर स्थिति ले ली।

प्रातः के 5:45 बजे पैराट्रूपर नाहर सिंह ने शस्त्र लिए हुए तीन व्यक्तियों के एक समूह को अपनी ओर आते हुए देखा। उन्होंने अपने दल को सतर्क किया और उन संदिग्ध व्यक्तियों को ललकारा किंतु उन्होंने गोलियां चलानी आरंभ कर संपर्क-विच्छेद करने प्रयास किया व भाग निकले। पैराट्रूपर नाहर सिंह एक-एक आड़ पर झपटे और उनसे भयंकर मुठभेड़ हुई।

पैराट्रूपर नाहर सिंह ने आतंकवादियों को घेरने के लिए अपनी टुकड़ी को साहसपूर्वक आगे बढ़ाया। आगे बढ़ते समय उनके कंधे में गोली लग गई। घाव की पीड़ा से अविचलित वह साहस से आगे बढ़ते रहे और दो आतंकवादियों को मार दिया, किंतु इस भयानक प्रक्रिया में उनके पेट में पुनः गोली लगी और वह युद्धक्षेत्र में ही वीरगति को प्राप्त हो गए।

पैराट्रूपर नाहर सिंह को उनके अदम्य साहस, नेतृत्व एवं सर्वोच्च बलिदान के लिये मरणोपरांत सेना मेडल (वीरता) से अलंकृत किया गया।
