Nandurbar (नंदुरबार) is a city and district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The District Nandurbar was formed from the district Dhule on July 1, 1998. Nandurbar is an administrative district in the northwest corner of (Khandesh region) of Maharashtra.[3] On 1 July 1998 Dhule was bifurcated as two separate districts now known as Dhule and Nandurbar. The district headquarters is located at Nandurbar city.

Location

Nandurbar district is bounded to the south and south-east by Dhule district, to the west and north is the state of Gujarat, to the north and north-east is the state of Madhya Pradesh. The northern boundary of the district is defined by the great Narmada river.

Geography

Nandurbar is located at 21.37°N 74.25°E. It has an average elevation of 210 metres (688 feet). It has mainly a hilly region and has 'Toranmal' hill station which is 75 km from the Nandurbar district. It is the second hill station after Matheran in Maharashtra. Tapi river is located at 12 km from city. Narmada river forms the district's boundary on the northern and north-eastern side. It is well known tribal area, hence called tribal district.

The district comprises six talukas. These talukas are Nandurbar, Navapur, Shahada, Taloda, Akkalkuwa and Akrani Mahal (also called Dhadgaon).

History

Nandurbar is a part of Satpuda Pradesh, meaning Seven Hills Region. The district was part of the district with Dhule and Jalgaon till July 1998. The ancient name of the region was Rasika, when Nandurbar was also called Nandanagri after the name of its king Nandaraja.[1]

On 3 June 1818 the Maratha Peshwa surrendered Khandesh to the British rule.

नंदुरबार

नंदुरबार भारत के महाराष्ट्र राज्य के नंदुरबार ज़िले में स्थित एक नगर है। यह उस ज़िले का मुख्यालय भी है। यह महाराष्ट्र के पश्चिमोत्तरी कोने में गुजरात राज्य की सीमा के समीप खानदेश क्षेत्र में स्थित है।

भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम में नंदुरबार की अपनी हिस्सेदारी थी। यहीं पर 1942 के भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन के दौरान 15 साल के एक लड़के शिरीषकुमार मेहता की बंदूक की गोली से जान चली गई थी। शिरीष कुमार की याद में उस चौक पर एक छोटा सा स्मारक बनाया गया है जहां उन्होंने अपना खून बहाया था।

नंदुरबार सतपुड़ा प्रदेश यानी सात पहाड़ी क्षेत्र का एक हिस्सा है। जुलाई 1998 तक यह जिला धुले और जलगांव वाले जिले का हिस्सा था। इस क्षेत्र का प्राचीन नाम रसिका है, जब नंदुरबार को इसके राजा नंदराजा के नाम पर नंदनगरी भी कहा जाता था।
