Mallika Sehrawat is an Indian actress from Hisar and Rohtak area of the state of Haryana. She was born on October 24, 1981 in a Jat family of Lamba gotra. Her real name was Reema Lamba.

Mallika Sherawat's birth name is Reema Lamba but she adopted the screen name of "Mallika", meaning "empress", to avoid confusion with other actresses named Reema. "Sehrawat" is her mother's gotra. She uses her mother's name as a tribute to her mother's love and support.

Career

She has a degree in philosophy from Miranda House, Delhi University.

Mallika became known as a sex symbol after her starring appearance in the hit film Murder (2004).

On July 2004, the Bollywood film producers' union IMPAA temporarily blacklisted Mallika. Filmmaker Ramesh Sharma complained that she had committed breach of contract when she failed to turn up, as promised, for the filming of Kab Kyun Kahan (started in 1999).

She was listed at number 10 on the 2004 Filmfare Top Ten Actress' List.

Mallika, who has earned her reputation by shcoking the Indian Middle class, was the first Indian woman to get an offer to pose nude for Playboy magazine -- ironically, however, refused the offer claining her morals and upbringing, although she has appeared semi-nude many times in many publications.
