Tribute to stimulators

It was in the early thirties that the late learned Professor, Kalika-Ranjan Qanungo, a teacher of my father, late Maj. Piyare Lal, an old graduate of the Ramjas College, Delhi, visited and stayed with our family in our village, Kanheli, along with Sir Jadunath Sarcar, another historian of repute and a good admirer of the Jats. They narrated a few stories connected with Lord Lake's fiasco in 1803 to subjugate the invincible fort of the Jat rulers of Bharatpur to the illiterate gathering on a "chabutra" after sun-set. They kindled a fire in me to know more about these wonderful people. My father, being a keen student of the Indian and European history, encouraged me to pursue such studies. The fires of this ambition were stoked further by my Principals, Shri Somnath Sanyal, Ch. Sohan Singh Gill and Ch. Dhaja Ram Sangwan.

The greatest fillip I received was from my favourite and learned Principal Shri Sita Ram Kohli, a renowned historian of the Panjab; Maj. G.B. Singh, "a humorous cynic par excellence, but loved by all", who put me on right track in English, Dr. J.N. Khosla, Head of the Deptt. of Political Science, Punjab University before 1947, who later held Ambassadorial assignments in various foreign countries; and Principal Shri P.L. Anand, who "considered the Jats as the most advanced people because of their observance of widow marriage, their unorthodox and pragmatic approach to religion, the secular and democratic organisatlon of their Institutions, and, to crown all, their all-pervasive humour and wit, and their use of scythe and sword with equal dexterity". I earnestly owe a sense of gratitude to all of them.

The late Ch. Raghunath Singh, Distt. Attorney; Capt. Jai Singh Nandal (Rtd.), Ch. Rameshwar Dalal, Agriculture Teacher (Rtd.); Ch. Jage Ram Dahiya, Ex-Asstt. Registrar (Accounts) Co-operative Societies, Punjab; late Principal, Ch. Asha Ram, Professors (Miss) Indarjit Kaur Sidhu and Ch. J.K. Tomar, all three of the Chhotu Ram College of Education, Rohtak; and Dr. R.S. Mann, Joint Director and Regional Officer, Anthropological Survey of India, Dehra Dun; shared my feeling of the need for an authentic book on the Jats. Their advice, encouragement and help all along the way highly deserve my appceciatin.
