The mortal remains of Major Vikas Varyani, who died in a helicopter crash in Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, were consigned to flames in the city on Thursday evening.

The funeral procession started from his house in Shreejee Nagar in Durgapura to the crematorium at B2 bypass where Varyani's body was cremated with full state honours.

Varyani along with two other officers, Major Abhijeet Thapa and Captain Avinash, was killed in the helicopter crash at an airbase in Bareilly on Wednesday.

"Since his childhood, he wanted to serve his country by joining army. He spent his time in scouting and NCC when he was in school. Eight years ago, his wish was fulfilled when he was selected in the army," said Dolat Varyani, uncle of Major Vikas Varyani.

His relatives and well wishers were seen waiting for his body since morning. Six army officers shouldered his coffin from the vehicle to his house.

Two months ago, Vikas came to Jaipur. He was the only child of his parents. "Every morning, at around 7am after routine flights, he used to call his parents. But Wednesday was a fateful day when he did not call. At around 8am, his father received a call from an army officer that his son is no more," Varyani said.

When his body reached Jaipur, there was a gathering of his relatives and well wishers of his family, including Army officers. The army gave him guard of honour.

Varyani said, "He was a spiritual person. Every morning he used to call his mother to talk about spiritual things like simrans and bhajans. He took a lot of interest in Radha Swami satsang like his mother."
