Vishakhayupa (विशाखयूप) refers to the name of a Forest and Tīrtha (pilgrim’s destination) mentioned in the Mahābhārata (cf. III.88.12, III.174.16). Pandavas dwelt in that forest for one year during their exile. It is located in Himalayas near Yamunotri.[1]

Variants

History

Viśākhayūpa (विशाखयूप).—A holy place of pilgrimage. It is mentioned in Mahābhārata, Vana Parva, Chapter 90, Stanza 15, that this spot became a holy place because Indra, Varuṇa and other gods did penance here.[2][3]

Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 88 mentions tirthas in the North. Vishakhayupa (विशाख यूप) (F)/(T) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.88.12). [4].....There also is Vishakhayupa (विशाख यूप) (III.88.12) to which, in days of yore, came the gods with Varuna and Indra, and practised ascetic austerities. And therefore is that spot so eminently sacred.


Vana Parva, Mahabharata/Book III Chapter 174 describes Pandvas journey in twelfth year of their sojourn in forests having arrived reach Saraswati River. Vishakhayupa (विशाख यूप) (F)/(T) is mentioned in Mahabharata (III.174.16). [5] .....Then taking all the chariots and chariot-men and dismissing Ghatotkacha together with his followers, they next repaired to the monarch of mountains in the vicinity of the Yamuna Parvata. In the midst of the mountain abounding in waterfalls and having grey and orange-coloured slopes and summits covered with a sheet of snow, those warlike men having then found the great forest of Visakhayupa like unto the forest of Chitraratha and inhabited by wild boars and various kinds of deer and birds, made it their home. Addicted to hunting as their chief occupation, the sons of Pritha peacefully dwelt in that forest for one year.

विशाखयूप

विशाखयूप (AS, p.862): बदरीनाथ के पास हिमालय के क्रोड में स्थित एक प्राचीन वन - 'तस्मिन् गिरौ प्रस्रवणोपपन्नहिमोत्तरीयारुणपांडुसानौ, विशाखयूपं समुपेत्य चक्रुस्तदानिवासं पुरुष प्रवीरा:।' महाभारत, वनपर्व 177,16. महाभारत, वनपर्व 177,15 में यामुन पर्वत या यमुनोत्री का उल्लेख है। [6]
