Bhagsunag (भागसुनाग) is a village near Mcleodganj in Dharamshala of Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. It is popular for the Bhagsunag waterfall and the ancient Bhagsunag Temple.

Origin

• Bhagsunag gets name from a Nagavanshi King named Bhagsu.

History

As per the Indian mythology, the snake god got into a battle with King Bhagsu. The reason of the battle was that King Bhagsu had stolen water from the sacred lake called the Nag Dal Lake. King Bhagsu was defeated and eventually forgiven, and the site was consecrated as Bhagsu Nag.

In early 18th century, the Gorkhas came here with British to settle, and they formed the historic 1st Gorkha Rifles in 1815 (The Malaun Regiment). Bhagsu is also the home of 1st Gorkha Rifles (The Malaun Regiment).

Bhagsu is named after the Bhagsunag temple currently in McLeodGanj station including Bhagsu itself but also as Dharamshala, McLeodGanj and ForsythGanj.

Tourism

Because of the waterfall and close proximity to Mcleodganj, Dharamkot and the Triund Trek, Bhagsu has become a popular place for tourists to stay. A number of hotels have been opened in Bhagsu for the increasing number of tourists.

Bhagsunag Temple

Located two km from McLeod Ganj is an ancient temple dedicated to Bhagsu Nag, the snake god, and to Lord Shiva. A freshwater spring, in which pilgrims to take a holy dip flows through the temple. A beautiful waterfall, well worth visiting, is located about a 20-minute walk from the temple. The Bhagsu temple is located in the picturesque Bhagsu village, a Gaddi tribal village whose traditional livelihood was herding and farming. The village has become one of the main tourist centre in the area during the last few years, and many of the local people are now engaged in tourism. The village has a large number of restaurants and guesthouses.

Dharamkot and Bhagsu Nag, on the suburb of McLeod Ganj are the main villages inhabited by the Gaddi, a shepherd tribe and the original inhabitants of Dhauladhar. Both these villages house a crowd of small guest houses, and are good trade points for short and long hikes around Dharamsala and the Dhauladhar mountain range.

भाग्सूनाग (Bhagsunag): हिमाचल प्रदेश के धर्मशाला के नगर में मैकलॉडगंज के करीब स्थित भागसू एक सुंदर पर्यटन स्थान है,जोकि अपने प्राचीन मंदिर और सुरम्य झरने के लिए जाना जाता है। भागसुनाग मंदिर भगवान शिव को समर्पित है। मैक्लोडगंज से भागसु शहर सिर्फ 3 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर पड़ता है। भागसु शहर में जो भी पर्यटक आता है वह भागसुनाग मंदिर घूमे बिना यहां से नहीं जाता है। शिव जी का यह मंदिर बहुत प्राचीन है और हर साल यहां भक्तों का भारी जमावड़ा लगता है। भागसुनाग मंदिर के साथ आप यहां भागसुनाग वॉटरफॉल के मजे भी ले सकते हैं। भागसुनाग वॉटरफॉल में बहता पानी इतना शीतल है कि यह लोगों के दिलों में बस जाता है। भागसु शहर घूमते समय आपको तिब्बतन म्यूजियम भी जरूर जाना चाहिए।

इतिहास: भारतीय पौराणिक कथाओं के अनुसार नाग देवता का राजा भागसू के साथ युद्ध हुआ। युद्ध का कारण यह था कि राजा भागसू ने नागदल झील नामक पवित्र झील से पानी चुरा लिया था। राजा भागसू हार गए और अंततः उन्हें क्षमा कर दिया गया, और साइट को भागसू नाग के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित किया गया।

18वीं शताब्दी की शुरुआत में, गोरखा अंग्रेजों के साथ बसने के लिए यहां आए, और उन्होंने 1815 में ऐतिहासिक पहली गोरखा राइफल्स (द मलौन रेजिमेंट) का गठन किया। भागसू पहली गोरखा राइफल्स (द मलौन रेजिमेंट) का मुख्यालय भी है। भागसूनाग मंदिर एक 5000 साल पुराना मंदिर है।

प्राचीन भागसूनाग मंदिर: देवभूमि कहे जाने वाले हिमाचल प्रदेश के मनोहारी पर्यटक स्थल धर्मशाला के ऊपरी हिस्से मैक्लॉडगंज से भी करीब दो किलोमीटर ऊपर है प्राचीन मंदिर भागसूनाग है। मेकलॉडगंज के आस-पास बने मंदिर लोगों को खासे आकर्षित करते हैं। यहां से लगभग 10 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर भागसूनाग मंदिर स्थित है। यह भव्य तो नहीं, लेकिन प्रसिद्ध जरूर है। यहां के स्थानीय लोग दिखावे में यकीन नहीं करते, इसलिए इसे ज्यादा चमकाया नहीं गया। कई दूसरे मंदिर भी हैं जहां सैलानी दर्शन करने के लिए जरूर आते हैं। मंदिर से बायीं ओर कुछ ही दूरी पर डल झील है। झरने से आने वाला पानी यहां बनाए गए एक साफ-सुथरे स्विमिंग पूल मे इकट्ठा कर लिया जाता है, जिसमें लोग स्नान भी करते हैं। इस मंदिर से दायीं ओर आगे जाने पर वह झरना मिलता है। रोमांच के शौकीन सैलानी यहां तक भी जरूर जाते हैं।

खूबसूरत भागसूनाग झरना: मंदिर से कुछ ही दूरी पर भागसूनाग झरना स्थित है। इसका पानी एकदम निर्मल और ठंडक भरा होता है। यहां लोग घंटों पत्थरों पर बैठकर झरने की फुहारों का आनंद लेते हैं। बड़ों से ज्यादा यहां बच्चों का मन लगता है। पहाड़ी रास्तों पर आप बाइकिंग का मजा लेना चाहते हैं तो आपको यहां किराए पर मोटर साइकिल मिल जाएगी।
