Aswamedha Parva, Mahabharata/Book 14 Chapter 14 describes wonders of the Himalaya mountains. Chaksu (चक्सु) is mentioned in Mahabharata (XIV.14.17).[1]....And then the foremost descendant of Kuru again performed with Dhritarashtra the funeral rites (of the heroes slain in battle), and having given away immense wealth to the Brahmanas, the Pandava chief with Dhritarashtra in advance, made this entry into the city of Hastina Nagar, and consoling his lordly uncle, possessed of eyes of wisdom (Chakshu), that virtuous prince continued to administer the earth with his brothers.


Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 47 mentions the Kings who brought tributes to Yudhishthira: Vankshu River (वंक्षु) is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.47.22). [2].....And the Valhikas also presented numerous blankets of woollen texture manufactured in China (? On the banks of Vankshu) and numerous skins of the Ranku deer, and clothes manufactured from jute, and others woven with the threads spun by insects.


Aswamedha Parva, Mahabharata/Book 14 Chapter 8 mentions thousand names of Shiva. Chakshu is one of them.

चक्षु नदी

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[3] ने लेख किया है ...चक्षु नदी (AS, p.325) : विष्णु पुराण 2,2,36 में चक्षु को केतुमाल-वर्ष की नदी बताया गया है--'चक्षुश्च पश्चिमगिरीनतीय सकलांस्तथा पश्चिकेतुमालारूयं वर्ष गत्वैति सागरम् कोलब्रुक'। कोलब्रुक (दे. सिद्धांत शिरोमणि की टीका) तथा विलसन (दे.संस्कृतकोश) के अनुसार चक्षु, ऑक्सम नदी का एक प्राचीन संस्कृत नाम है। किंतु प्रो. पाठक ने यह सिद्ध करने का प्रयत्न किया है कि चक्षु का शुद्ध शब्द वक्षु (या वंक्षु) है और वक्षु का चक्षु संस्कृत साहित्य के परवर्ती काल

[p.326]: में प्रतिलिपिकार की भूल से बन गया है। वक्षु (या वंक्षु) संस्कृत के प्राचीन साहित्य में सर्वत्र ऑक्सम नदी के लिए व्यह्रत हुआ है। वाल्मीकि रामायण बाल काण्ड वा. रा. 43,13 में जिस सुचक्षु नदी का वर्णन गंगा की पश्चिमी धारा के रूप में है वह यही चक्षु या वक्षु जान पड़ती है-- 'सुचक्षुश्चेव सीता च सिंधुश्चैव महानदी, तिस्त्रश्चैतादिश जग्मु: प्रतीची तु दिशं शुभा:' सीता तरिम नदी है जो वक्षु में पश्चिम की ओर से आकर मिलती है। चक्षु को सीता के साथ गंगा की एक धारा माना गया है।

सुचक्षु

सुचक्षु(=चक्षु या ओक्षस) (AS, p.972): वाल्मीकि रामायण में वर्णित एक नदी जो विष्णु पुराण की चक्षु या प्रसिद्ध नदी ओक्सस (वंक्षु, वक्षु) ही जान पड़ती है. इसको सीता (=तारिम नदी) और सिंधु के साथ गंगा की पश्चिम गामिनी शाखा माना गया है. जान पड़ता है कि प्राचीन भारतीयों के मत में सुचक्षु का मूल स्रोत गंगा के उद्गम के पास ही था, 'सुचक्षुः च एव सीता च सिन्धुः च एव महानदी। तिस्रः एता दिशम् जग्मुः गंगाः शिव जलाः शुभाः' वाल्मीकि रामायण, बालकांड 43,13 (देखें सीता, चक्षु, वंक्षु)[4]
