Chausa (चौसा) is a block in the Buxar district of Bihar, India. It was site of the Battle of Chausa in which the forces of Sher Shah Suri defeated Mughal emperor Humayun's army in 1539.

Location

It is situated at the bank of river Ganga. Chausa is located 11 km towards west from the district headquarters, Buxar. Chausa is directly connected to Railway and road. Chausa Railway Station, Barakalan Railway Station are the very nearby railway stations to Chausa. The distance from Buxar Railway station is 11 km and Patna Airport/Railway 138 km and from Varanasi airport 127 km.

History

The area is famous as the site of the Battle of Chausa, in which the forces of Sher Shah Suri defeated Mughal emperor Humayun's army in 1539.[1]It was fought on 26 June 1539 at Chausa. Sher Shah was victorious and crowned himself Farīd al-Dīn Shēr Shah.[2][3]

It was also the site of discovery of the Chausa hoard, a set of 18 ancient Jain bronzes.

चौसा

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[4] ने लेख किया है ... चौसा (AS, p.347) बिहार में बक्सर के निकट कर्मनाशा नदी के किनारे चौसा नामक एक छोटा-सा क़स्बा है। 26 जून, 1539 ई. को इस स्थान पर हुमायूँ और शेरशाह सूरी के बीच युद्ध हुआ था। हुमायूँ बुरी तरह पराजित हुआ और उसे अपनी जान बचाकर भागना पड़ा। वह अपने घोड़े के साथ गंगा में कूद पड़ा और एक भिश्ती की मदद से डूबने से बच गया। चौसा के युद्ध का भारत के इतिहास में बहुत महत्व प्राप्त है. चौसा युद्ध के बाद शेरशाह बंगाल और बिहार का सुल्तान बन गया और उसने 'सुल्तान- ए-आदिल' की उपाधि धारण की। किंवदंती है कि चौसा का प्राचीन नाम च्यवनाश्रम था.
