Draupadi (Sanskrit: द्रौपदी), also referred to as Agnijyotsna (अग्निज्योत्स्ना), Krishna Draupadi (कृष्णा द्रौपदी) ; was the "emerged" daughter of King Drupada (द्रुपद) of Panchala and the wife of Arjuna in the epic Mahabharata. Since she was the daughter of king Drupada, she is popularly known as Draupadi (which means the daughter of Drupada).

When Yudhisthira becomes the king of Hastinapura at the end of the war, Draupadi (again) becomes the queen of Indraprastha. She is also variously referred to as Panchali (पांचाली) (meaning one from the kingdom of Panchala), and Yajnaseni (यज्ञसेनी) (meaning one born from a Yajna or fire-sacrifice), Mahabhaarati (महाभारती) (great wife of the five descendents of Bharata) and Sairandhri (सैरन्ध्री) (literally: an expert maid (her assumed name during her second exile in which she worked as Virat kingdom's queen Sudeshna's hair-stylist).

According to later version of epic Mahabharata, she had five sons, one by each of the Pandavas: Prativindhya (प्रतिविन्ध्य) from Yudhishthira, Sutasoma (सुतसोम) from Bhima, Srutakarma (श्रुतकर्मा) from Arjuna, Satanika (सतनीक) from Nakula, and Srutasena (श्रुतसेन) from Sahadeva. She is described in the Mahabharata as being extraordinarily beautiful, unsurpassed by any other woman of her time. Draupadi is one of the Panch-Kanya (पंचकन्या) (The Five Virgins) of the ancient Hindu epic, as is her Mother-in-Law, Kunti.

Controversy about marriage

Scholars are of the opinion that later versions of epic Mahabharta carry the wrong story about Draupadi's marriage, which mentions that she was the wife of five brothers (Pandavas). This type of polygamy never existed in Indian Vedic culture. Some scholars opine that Draupadi was married to Arjuna only because he had won the Swayamvar organised by King Drupada. Arjuna had hit the eye of the revolving fish with an arrow and Draupadi accepted him as her husband. Other scholars are of the view that although Arjuna had won the Swayamvar, she was ultimately married to Yudhisthira. Pandavas were Chandravanshi Jats and it was the tradition that when the elder brother is unmarried, the younger cannot marry. At the time of the Swayamvar, Yudhisthira was unmarried. King Drupada accepted the plea that marriage should be tied up with Yudhisthira, despite Arjuna had won the Swayamvara. Dhaumya Rishi (धौम्य ऋषि) had performed the marriage ceremony.
