History

This is the town where infant Lord Krishna was brought up in secrecy by his foster mother Yashoda. Situated on the banks of the Yamuna, Gokul is frequented by pilgrims, especially during Janmashtami and Annakut festival. The place is also associated with Saint Vallabhacharyaji who lived here. Some important spots are:

Shri Thakurani Ghat: It is a popular Ghat where Shri Vallabhacharya received Darshan of Shri Yamuna Maharani. Thus, this place seeks special reverence from the followers of Lord Vishnu especially those from the Vallabha sect.

Nanda Bhavan: The divine Architect Vishwakarma had built Nanda Bhavan 5000 years ago. Located on a hill, it was the house of Nanda, foster father of Lord Krishna. In this house, young Krishna and his brother Balarama were brought up while his birth parents were imprisoned by King Kamsa in Vrindavan.

Raman Reti: Raman Reti is believed to be the sand in which Lord Krishna played as a child. In more recent times, about 200 years ago, the famous Saint, Swami Gyandasji did a severe penance at Raman Reti for 12 years. Pleased with his devotion, The Lord appeared before him and today you can find a Ramanbihariji Mandir at that spot. Today devotees roll over the sand here and seek the blessings of Lord Krishna.

Rangbihariji Temple: The main idol of Rangbiharji temple is the exact image of Lord Krishna described by Swami Gyandas ji as he was the one who had the opportunity to see the divine.

Abdali's Bloody Encounter at Gokul: 16th March 1757

Girish Chandra Dwivedi[2] writes.... Ahmad Shah Abdali's Jat Expedition: [p.179]: Hardly had Suraj Mal got relief from the internal crisis, when the Abdali invaded India, (December, 1756). Partly on his own and partly at the supplications of Mughalani Begam, Najib and others, Ahmad Shah Abdali swooped down on the imperil Capital (January, 1757) without meeting any effective resistance on his way. The invaders methodically sacked, tortured and outraged the populace of the Capital. Alamgir was deposed, Imad imprisoned and the Wizarat conferred upon Intizam on his promising to give two crores to the Shah. To escape the Afghan havoc, about half the population of the city flocked to popular refuge, the Jat dominions. However, unlike their earlier behaviour, the Jats this time added to the misery of the refugees by extorting money from them at every post from Badarpur to Mathura. Yet, such a heavy influx continued that getting accommodation became difficult at Mathura.

Girish Chandra Dwivedi[3] writes.... [p.185]: Ahmad Shah Abdali was slowly coming pillaging and killing the people and desolating the rural areas. He divided his forces into groups of 50 soldiers each for the purposes of combing the adjacent areas. Halting at Shergarh, Hasanpur, Nadinah, and other places he arrived near Mathura on 15th March, 1757 and encamped at close by Mahaban. On the 16th, the greedy invader directed a contingent to loot Gokul (two miles away from his camp). But 4,000 martial naga Sanyasis of that place were determined, to defend their religious shrines. In a fierce action 2,000 Nagas fell but not before killing an equal number of the Afghan soldiers. Yet, none of the two sides would yield, Jugal Kishore, an agent of the Bengal governor, was present in the Abdali's camp. He pointed out the futility of fighting the Sanyasis as they possessed no money. The Abdali, therefore, recalled his troops and Gokul became an exception to the all round Afghan devastation. Incidentally, this episode disclosed that the Abdali's cupidity out-weighed his religious fanaticism. About this time Sarwar Khan had gone to sack Dhawalpuri.

In Mahabharata

Gokula (गॊकुल) in Mahabharata (VIII.4.38)

Karna Parva/Mahabharata Book VIII Chapter 4 mentions the warriors who are dead in Mahabharata War amongst the Kurus and the Pandavas after ten days. Gokula (गॊकुल) warriors are mentioned in Mahabharata (VIII.4.38). [4]....Those other heroes also, (the Narayana Gopas) who live and grew in Gokula, who were exceedingly wrathful in battle, and who never retreated from the field have been slain by Savyasachi. Many thousands of Srenis, as also the samsaptakas, approaching Arjuna, have all repaired to the abode of Yama.
