Hanjra
Hanjra (हंजरा) Hinjra (हिंजरा)[1] Hinjar (हिन्जर)[2] Hinjara (हींजरा)[3] is gotra of Jats in Punjab.[4] Henjara (हेंजरा)[5] Hinjrawan [6] Hajraw (हाजराव)[7] are in Pakistan. Hanjra (हंजरा) Muhammadan Jat clan is found in Montgomery (doubtless Hinjra). [8] Hanjrae (हन्जराए) Jat clan is found in Amritsar . [9] They were supporters of Saroya Confederacy. [10] [11]
History
After the Partition of India, Hindu and Sikh Hanjra Jats moved to eastern Punjab (comprising today's states of Punjab (India), Haryana and Himachal Pradesh). While the Muslim Hanjra Jats migrated to Pakistan. Hanjras own large swaths of land in western Punjab and are generally considered to be one of the most richest, educated, talented and powerful Jats. Hanjras hold a proud heritage of being among the most sought after clans during marital affairs, due to their strong lineage. They are known for their intelligence and looks. There are a significant number of Hanjras in Pakistan, in the area around Sialkot District and Jhang, in the late 19th century many of Hanjras settled around Jhang and Faisalabad after the establishment of an irrigation system.
Sub divisions of Saroya
Bhim Singh Dahiya[12] provides us list of Jat clans who were supporters of the Saroya when they gained political ascendancy. The Hinjrawan clan supported the ascendant clan Saroya and became part of a political confederacy.[13]
Religion
Hanjras in eastern Punjab in India are predominantly Sikh. The Hanjras in Pakistan are predominantly Muslims.
Distribution in India
According to 1911 census, the following were the principal Muslim Jats of this clan[14]:
- Amritsar District Hanjra (142),
- Gurdaspur District Hanjra (181),
- Hinjra population is 4,689 in Amritsar district.[15]
Distribution in Pakistan
Hanjra - The Hanjra were found mainly in Gujranwala, Lahore and Amritsar districts. They are also the largest Jat clan in Muzaffargarh District.
According to 1911 census, the following were the principal Muslim Jats of this clan[16]:
- Sialkot District Hanjra (1,744),
- Gujranwala District Hanjra (4,334),
- Lahore District Hanjra (836),
- Gujrat District Hanjra (3,736),
- Shahpur (Sargodha District) District Hanjra (790),
- Lyalpur District (Faisalabad District) Hanjra (805),
